In 1917 The Battle cruiser HMS Furious was fully re constructed as an aircraft carrier. with further re construction between June 1922 and 31st August 1925 at Devonport Dockyard. At this stage there was no island until a small one was constructed in a refit in 1939. In 1939 HMS Furious was completely re armed with twelve 4 inch 45 calibre QF guns in twin mountings. and three 8 barreled pompoms with a fourth added in April 1941. and before the end of world war two a further fifteen 20mm Oerlikons were added. she survived the war with no major damage serving in the home fleet 1939 to 1944 and the reserve 1944-45 but her condition deteriorated near the end of the war and by September 1944 she was taken out of service. and finally Scrapped in December 1946 at Inverkeithing.
