HMS Repulse naval art prints.  Ian Berryman artist gallery of naval prints featuring the Royal Navy battleship HMS Repulse.  This gallery includes all naval art prints and naval paintings by Ivan Berryman which depict the battleship HMS Repulse.

HMS Repulse was built at Clydebank by John Brown, and launched on 8th January 1916 . She saw action in the First World war on the 17 November 1917 at Heligoland Bight (a sortie by British battle cruisers.). Due to the losses at the Battle of Jutland. The reputation of Battle cruisers and been badly damaged. HMS Repulse and her sister ship Renown had additional armour platting fitted especially over the crowns of the Magazines, Steering Room and over the Engine Room.  HMS Repluse was the first Ship to be fitted with a flying off platform in the autumn of 1917. Squadron leader Rutland successfully flew a Sopwith Pup from the B turret on 1st October 1917.   After the first world war, The Royal navy rectified the fault of having thin armour by giving the Belt armour  from the ex Chilean battleship Almirante Cochrame (which was being converted to an aircraft carrier). HMS repulse went into Portsmouth for this major refit which took between December 1918 to January 1921.     During World War Two. She operated off Norway in 1940, and on Convoy duty until the summer of 1941. Repulse joined the eastern Fleet in October 1941, arriving at Singapore on the 2nd of December, she sailed with HMS Prince of Wales and four destroyers to attack Japanese naval forces in their landing areas around Malaya. On the 10th December both the repulse and Prince of Wales were attacked by 80 Japanese aircraft and were sunk, HMS Repulse being hit by a Torpedo and sunk at 1233 hours, after being hit by a further 4 hits.

Mitsubishi G4Ms of 27 Kanoya Kokutai begin their devastating attack on Force Z off the north east coast of Malaya on 10th December 1941. Both Repulse and prince of Wales were lost in the attack, while their accompanying destroyers remained to pick up survivors among them HMS Express which can be seen off HMS Repulse starboard quarter.

HMS Repulse by Ivan Berryman.

Wearing her unusual black and white disruptive colour scheme, HMS Repulse is pictured as part of Force Z in company with HMS Prince of Wales and the destroyer Vampire. These two mighty battleships were to be lost within hours of each other, the victims of intense Japanese air strikes. Vampire and the destroyer Electra were on hand to pick up survivors from both ships.
