Together with her sister, Tirpitz, the Bismarck was Germany's most modern and formidable warship of WWII. Equipped with the very latest in rangefinder technology and festooned with defensive firepower, perhaps her most daunting weapons were the eight 15 inch guns, arranged in four turrets, that were to prove so effective against almost every other ship that she encountered, the most famous of these arguably being the Royal Navy's HMS Hood, sunk with huge loss of life in the Battle of the Denmark Strait in March 1941. Bismarck is depicted here in company with Prinz Eugen.
The Beaufighters of No.144 Sqn wrought havoc on Axis shipping in the North Sea from their base at Dallachy in Scotland during 1944-45. Here, Mk X NT961 (PL-O) has singled out a lone vessel and dealt it the full salvo of rockets and machine gun fire.
Without doubt the most advanced and forward-thinking design for an attack and reconnaissance aircraft in its day, the BAC TSR.2 was to fall victim to the shortsightedness of a misguided Labour government whose entrenched position in the mid 1960s dealt a terrible blow to the British aircraft industry - a blow from which it never fully recovered. Whilst the few TSR.2 airframes that had been constructed languished in outside storage or on gunnery ranges, its intended American replacement, the General Dynamics F.111, was ready for RAF service fully ten years late and at a cost of nearly three times that of a production TSR.2, with the order being cancelled at the last minute. Here, XR219 streaks into the air having ridden the 'hump' in the Boscombe Down runway.

Top Dressing in New Zealand (1) by Ivan Berryman. (P)

Top Dressing in New Zealand (1) by Ivan Berryman. (P)

Landing and taking off from the hillsides, rather than established airfields, this was extremely dangerous work which involved the pilot following the terrain and contours of the land that was being dressed in order to ensure an even distribution of the chemical. Australian-born Jim McMahon, served during World War II on B.25 Mitchell bombers before pioneering crop dusting and topdressing in New Zealand with ex-military De Havilland Tiger Moths which he converted himself for the purpose. He went on to form a company called Crop Culture, which specialised in aerial spraying equipment, both in New Zealand and in the UK, before becoming a partner in the newly-formed Britten-Norman aircraft company which produced the Islander and Trislander utility transport aircraft in England.

HMS Norfolk at the Battle of the North Cape by Ivan Berryman (P)

HMS Norfolk and HMS Belfast of Force I are shown engaging the Scharnhorst which has already been hit and disabled by both HMS Duke of York and the cruiser HMS Jamaica. Scharnhorst was never to escape the clutches of the British and Norwegian forces for, having been slowed to just a few knots by numerous hits, fell victim to repeated torpedo attacks by the allied cruisers and destroyers that had trapped the German marauder.

Desperate Measures by Ivan Berryman. (P)

Desperate Measures by Ivan Berryman. (P)

Having already registered two victories since his arrival at 501 Sqn in the Autumn of 1940, Plt Off K W Mackenzie found himself again in action against some Messerschmitt Bf.109s on 7th October, sharing in the destruction of one before vigorously pursuing another as it turned to head out across the Channel. With his ammunition exhausted, Mackenzie was determined not to let the interloper escape and placed his Hurricane's starboard wing over the tail of the Bf.109, bringing it violently down and severing the tail of the German fighter which plunged uncontrollably into the sea. With his own wingtip missing from the impact and his engine now damaged by rounds from other pursuing German aircraft, Mackenzie limped his crippled Hurricane over the cliffs near Folkestone, where he crash-landed. He survived the incident, albeit with some facial injuries sustained when he was thrown against the gunsight, and was awarded the DFC for his gallantry.

The Supermarine S6.B was the aircraft famed for winning the Schneider Trophy outright in 1931. Here, the Rolls Royce R engine is being lowered into the body of the aircraft. The engine cover on the aircraft was so large that when it was removed, there was very little left except a void where the engine would be.

The Long Patrol by Ivan Berryman. (P)

The Long Patrol by Ivan Berryman. (P)

When the RAF took delivery of their first Consolidated B.24 Liberators in 1941, aerial cover for trans-Atlantic convoys was strengthened, affording these brave merchant ships a modicum of protection as they forged their slow passage from the US to Britain with vital supplies. 120 Sqn was immediately pressed into this role from their initial base at Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland, before moving to Ballykelly and Reykjavik in Iceland as the U-Boat threat increased. The example shown is a Liberator V of RAF Coastal Command.

Tribute to the Royal Navy Trawler Crews - HMS Arab by Ivan Berryman. (P)

Having departed the Namsen Fjord in Norway, on a course home to England across the North Sea, HMS Arab was intercepted by a Heinkel He.115 and ordered to sail due east or be attacked. His orders ignored, the German pilot began a series of passes over the trawler, raking the small vessel with continuous fire from both of its guns. The gallant crew of the Arab returned fire with all Lewis and Oerlikon guns blazing, the Heinkel being mortally wounded as it made a low pass across the bow of Arab, finally plunging into the sea some two miles astern of the trawler who continued, without further incident, to her destination at Scapa.

The Tenacious Grid Caldwell by Ivan Berryman. (P)

The Tenacious Grid Caldwell by Ivan Berryman. (P)

New Zealand's highest scoring ace, with 25 victories to his credit, proved himself to be an extraordinary and resourceful leader. Whilst on a routine patrol in September 1918, Keith Logan 'Grid' Caldwell's 74 Sqn SE5a was involved in a mid-air collision with another SE5a, the impact breaking one of Caldwell's struts and destroying the aerodynamics of his aircraft, which promptly dropped 1,000 ft and went into a flat spin. Incredibly, Caldwell climbed from the cockpit of his stricken machine and held the broken strut together with his left hand whilst keeping his right hand on the joystick, somehow steering his wayward fighter out of danger and over friendly territory. With no hope of a safe landing, the Kiwi jumped clear of the SE5a just a second or so before it impacted with the ground. Astounded British soldiers in a nearby trench saw Caldwell stand, dust himself off and walk casually toward them. He returned to his unit and continued flying until the end of .........

First Strike by Ivan Berryman. (P)

First Strike by Ivan Berryman. (P)

The Avro Lancaster B MkIII ED932(G), AJ-G, of Wing Commander Guy Gibson was the first aircraft to make an attempt at breaching the Möhne Dam on the night of 16/17th of May 1943 as Operation Chastise got underway. Having already made one 'sighting' run over the target, Gibson turned and began his second run, the flak and 20mm fire from the shore and from the towers of the dam now throwing up a hail of fire. Undeterred, the Upkeep mine was released, skipping across the water as planned, but striking the dam wall off centre with no visible effect. Gibson made several passes over the Möhne, each time escorting the attacking aircraft in an attempt to draw the enemy fire. With the Möhne finally breached, he led the remaining aircraft on to the Eder dam with similar success before returning safely to Manston.

HMS Dorsetshire by Ivan Berryman (P)

HMS Dorsetshire by Ivan Berryman (P)

The heavy cruiser HMS Dorsetshire is brought up to sink the blazing wreck of the Bismarck with torpedoes at around 10:30 hours on the morning of May 27th 1941. The once proud German ship had been ruthlessly pounded into a twisted and burning wreck by the British battleships Rodney and King George V. HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Maori combed the area of the sinking for survivors, between them picking up a total of 110 out of an original complement of 2,300.
