Text for the above items :

HMS Hood by Ivan Berryman (PC)

Pride of the Royal Navy, the mighty Hood rolls majestically in the north Atlantic swell as HMS Prince of Wales holds station off her starboard bow.

Canberra and HMS Argonaut by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The P & O cruise liner Canberra lies in San Carlos Water, Falkland Islands, in May 1982, looking very weather-beaten after her punishing journey south during the conflict with Argentina, whilst HMS Argonaut keeps a watching vigil by her side. Both Argonaut and Canberra repeatedly came under air attack in San Carlos Water during the disembarkation of 42 Commando, both surviving the encounters, unlike the unfortunate HMS Ardent which was hit and sunk.

Bismarck at Hamburg by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Bismarck, now complete and newly painted in full Baltic camouflage, returns to Hamburg for the last time as the harsh winter of 1940/41 relents and the pride of the German Kriegsmarine prepares for real action. In the distance, the pre-Dreadnought Schleswig-Holstein awaits her next commission, the old ship alternating between vital ice-breaker and air defence duties at this time.

HMS Valiant and HMS Phoebe at Alexandria, 1941 by Ivan Berryman (PC)

A pair of 272 Squadron Bristol Beaufighters roar over the extensively rebuilt battleship HMS Valiant as she lies at anchor at Alexandria late in 1941, accompanied by the cruiser HMS Phoebe and Valiants sister ship HMS Queen Elizabeth (in the extreme distance)

HMS Captain and HMS Southampton, 1796 by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The 74 gun HMS captain, flying the flag of Commodore Horatio Nelson, lies at anchor at Sound Rock, Bahamas, in company with the 32-gun frigate HMS Southampton in 1796.

Veterans of the Med by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Alone in the aerial defence of Malta in the early part of WW2, these three Gloster Gladiators, nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity, saw such intense action against the invading Italian air force that the enemy's commanders were convinced that a much bigger force existed on Malta. They are depicted here making a low pass over the destroyer HMS Dainty as she heads out of Grand Harbour from Sliema Creek. Herself a veteran of much action in the early part of the war, HMS Dainty was lost to dive bombers off Tobruk on 24th February 1941.

Moonlight Despatch by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The role of the frigate in Nelson's navy was one of the most varied of all the ships of the line, but their great speed made them ideal as communications vessels, carrying vital despatches between ships, squadrons and the Admiralty.

Kapitanleutnant zur See Friedrich Christiansen by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

During a patrol on 6th July 1918, Christiansen spotted a British submarine on the surface of the Thames Estuary. He immediately turned and put his Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 floatplane into an attacking dive, raking the submarine C.25 with machine gun fire, killing the captain and five other crewmen. This victory was added to his personal tally, bringing his score to 13 kills by the end of the war, even though the submarine managed to limp back to safety. Christiansen survived the war and went on to work as a pilot for the Dornier company, notably flying the giant Dornier Do.X on its inaugural flight to New York in 1930. He died in 1972, aged 93.

The Channel Dash by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

February 1942 and Viz. Admiral Ciliaxs mighty Scharnhorst leads her sister Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen up the English Channel during Operation Cerberus, their daring breakout from the port of Brest on the French Atlantic coast to the relative safety of Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbuttel. All three ships survived what became known as the Channel Dash, not without damage, but the operation proved a huge propaganda success for Germany and a crushing embarrassment for the British. A number of torpedo boats are in attendance, including Kondor and Falke and the Z class destroyer Friedrich Ihn in the distance.

HMS Victory - Home Before the Squall by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Against the darkening skies of an impending storm, HMS Victory is depicted entering Portsmouth Harbour. This iconic ship, launched in Chatham in 1765, is now preserved in Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard on public display and is still a commissioned warship in the Royal Navy. Weighing 2,162 tons, Victory was crewed by 850 men and carried 104 guns on three decks.

HMS Resolution - Polar Explorer by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Originally a North Sea Collier named the Marquis of Granby, HMS Resolution was purchased by the Royal Navy and fitted out with all the very latest navigational aids and a water purification system in readiness for Captain Cook's second voyage to the Pacific in 1772. During this voyage, in 1773, Resolution became the first ship to cross the Antarctic Circle, entering the southern polar region on three occasions. Resolution was also Cook's choice for his third voyage in 1776 when she crossed the Arctic Circle twice in 1778 and 1779. Following her voyages of discovery, she returned to cargo duties, but her ultimate fate is unclear, as she was captured by the French in June 1782 and was never heard of again.

U-107 by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The German Type IXB U-Boat U-107 completed 13 active patrols between 1941 and 1944, well above the average lifespan for a U-boat during this period. U-107 sunk 39 ships with a total tonnage in excess of 200,000 tons. Shown here under attack from a Sunderland, this would be her ultimate demise. On 18th August 1944, Sunderland EJ150 of No.201 Sqn sunk the U-Boat with depth charges in the Bay of Biscay with the loss of the entire crew.

RMS Titanic by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The elegant but ill-fated jewel in the White Star crown Titanic was a technical marvel of engineering in its day. At 882 ft long, her perfect proportions and magnificent profile were the envy of other shipping companies. her tragic loss on her maiden voyage was a crushing blow to the White Star Line that left the whole world in shock.

HMS Ajax by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

HMS Ajax was built as a light cruiser at Barrow and launched in 1935. She saw service initially in the American and West Indies theatre before temporary commission in the Mediterranean. Then followed her never to be forgotten role in the Battle of the River Plate ending in the scuttling of the Graf Spee. She is seen here entering Portsmouth Harbour with the Isle of Wight in the background.

Frigate Action off Antigua by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

HMS Boreas encounters the French Compas, August 29th 1779.

Against All Odds - Attack on the Scharnhorst by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Swordfish of 825 Sqn led by Lt-Cdr Esmonde begin their heroic attack on the battlescruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen as they make their way up the English Channel from Brest during Operation Cerberus on 12th February 1942. Although all the aircraft were lost and no significant damage was done to the German fleet, all the pilots were decorated for their bravery and Lt-Cdr Esmonde received the first Fleet Air Arm VC to be awarded, albeit posthumously. The painting depicts the first wave of Swordfish attacking the Scharnhorst with Gneisenau taking avoiding action in the distance. A German torpedo boat has turned to confront the attacking aircraft.

HMS Pegasus by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The last seaplane carrier built for the Admiralty, HMS Pegasus was launched in 1917 and benefited from all the lessons learned from her predecessors, possessing a flying-off platform forward, served by twin derricks, and a hangar and cranes aft, capable of carrying up to nine aircraft. She is shown here with one of her Short 184s (N9290) about to take off, whilst a similar aircraft is preparing to be lowered into the water in the background.

HMS Hermes - Under Leaden Skies by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Laid down as early as June 1944, HMS Hermes (R12) was not commissioned into the Royal Navy until 25th November 1959. This fine ship has enjoyed a long and varied career, perhaps its most notable role being that of flagship to the British Task Force that was sent to liberate the Falkland Islands following the Argentine invasion of 1982. She was decommissioned in 1984 and sold to the Indian Navy, whereupon she was renamed Viraat. Hermes is depicted here in stormy weather in the late 1970s before the Harrier 'ski jump' was added to her bow in readiness for the Falklands Campaign.

Scourge of the Deep - Leonardo da Vinci by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Under the command of Gianfranco Gazzana-Priaroggia, the Regia Marina submarine Leonardo da Vinci was to become the most successful non-German submarine of World War Two. On 21st April 1943, she encountered the liberty ship SS John Drayton which was returning, unladen, to Capetown from Bahrain and put two torpedoes into her before surfacing to finish her off with shells. The deadly reign of terror wrought by the combination of Gazzana-Priaroggia and his submarine came to an end just one month later when the Leonardo da Vinci was sunk by HMS Active and HMS Ness off Cape Finistere.

USS Dwight Eisenhower by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

A pair of F18 Hornets overfly the Nimitz-class carrier USS Dwight Eisenhower (CV-69) with the surface combatant USS Arleigh Burke (DDF-51) off her port bow.
