Helped build Hamilcar gliders in the early part of the war, before joining the Royal Navy, and taking part in Operation Neptune, D-Day. Joining the Royal Navy in May 1943, he served as a messenger at all action stations as part of the quarter-deck staff on board HMS Bellona.
