Lexington was the US Navies second aircraft carrier, originally ordered as
USS Constitution and designed as a battlecruiser, but was re named
USS Lexington in December 1917. In July 1922 she was re ordered as a
aircraft carrier (CV-2) and launched 3rd October 1925. Arriving with the
US Navy in January 1929. In December 1929 she became a floating
power station along with her sister ship USS Saratoga when the city
of Tacoma had a massive power failure. USS Lexington took part
in the Battle for Wake Island. the n took part in convoy
escort duty. In May 1942 she operated with task Force 11, a joint
Allied naval force formed to prevent Japanese landing on New
Guinea at Port Moresby. On the 8th May 1942. USS Lexington was
involved in the Battle of the Coral Sea. the Two opposing aircraft forces
sighted each other and the Lexington was hit by three bombs and two
torpedoes. the damage was great and wiht the loss of 216 dead and
had to be adandoned. and later being sunk by the USS Phelps.
