USS Dwight Eisenhower by Ivan Berryman. (PC) A pair of F18 Hornets overfly the Nimitz-class carrier USS Dwight Eisenhower (CV-69) with the surface combatant USS Arleigh Burke (DDF-51) off her port bow. |
HMS Hood Opens Fire Upon the Bismarck by Ivan Berryman. (PC) In the early morning murk of 24th May 1941, the forward 15in guns of HMS Hood fire the first shots against the mighty German battleship Bismarck. Both Bismarck and her escort, the Prinz Eugen, immediately responded, the latter causing a fierce fire on Hoods upper deck, while plunging shot from Bismarck penetrated deep into the British ships hull, causing an explosion that ripped the Hood apart, sinking her in an instant. Tragically, just three survivors were rescued from the water. |
U.123 - The Atik's Revenge by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On 27 March 1942, Q-ship USS Atik (AK 101) received a torpedo hit from the U.123, forward of her bridge structure. The ship caught fire and, as her bow dropped in the water, she developed a list to port. U.123 closed in to finish the ship off, at which point USS Atik uncovered her concealed weapons and raked the U-boat with 50mm fire, killing one of the German crew. U.123 was driven off, but she submerged and fired another torpedo into the Atik's engine room which was the final blow for the brave Q-ship. |
HMS Howe by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Depicted off Capetown with the distinctive skyline of Table Mountain providing the backdrop, the King George V class battleship HMS Howe and her destroyer escort began their journey home having visited New Zealand as well as South Africa following the end of hostilities in 1945. |
ORP Blyskawica at Cowes by Ivan Berryman. (PC) With the iconic hammerhead crane dominating the Cowes skyline ORP Blyskawica slips away from the J S Whites Shipyard where she was built and launched on 1st October 1936. With her sister ship, ORP Grom, both ships were attached to the Royal Navy as part of the Free Polish Forces. While Grom was attacked and sunk in Rombaksfjord in May 1940, Blyskawica returned to Cowes for a refit in the spring of 1942 when, on the night of 4th May she used her own weapons to vigorously defend Cowes during a particularly intense bombardment of the town by the German Luftwaffe, endearing the ship and her brave crew to the townsfolk of both East and West Cowes. ORP Blyskawica survives to this day as a floating museum at the port of Gdynia in Poland. |
The Pursuit of the Graf Spee by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Viewed from beneath the blistered guns of the damaged X and Y turrets of her sister HMS Ajax, Achilles come sunder fire from the pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee during what was to become known as the Battle of the River Plate on the 13th December 1939. Shells from Achilles are closing on her opponent as the Graf Spee alters course at the start of the doomed battleships flight to Montevideo. |
HMS Pegasus by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The last seaplane carrier built for the Admiralty, HMS Pegasus was launched in 1917 and benefited from all the lessons learned from her predecessors, possessing a flying-off platform forward, served by twin derricks, and a hangar and cranes aft, capable of carrying up to nine aircraft. She is shown here with one of her Short 184s (N9290) about to take off, whilst a similar aircraft is preparing to be lowered into the water in the background. |
The Battle of Copenhagen - HMS Glattons Bravest Day by Ivan Berryman (PC) The battle of Copenhagen was long and hard-fought and Admiral Parker ordered Admiral Nelson to withdraw, an order that Nelson ignored. At one point a Danish frigate moved swiftly to attack Nelsons flagship HMS Elephant, but Captain Bligh of HMS Glatton sailed his ship directly into the broadside to protect the flagship. The Glatton, already displaying some damage, somehow survived the terrible barrage inflicted to its hull by the low-firing Danish vessel. The Elephant was saved and the battle eventually won with the unconditional capitulation of Denmark. It was surely Captain Blighs finest hour and an act of selfless bravery. In the background, HMS Bellona is aground on a sand bank, one of three British ships that failed to navigate the narrow channel. |
One Minute to Juno by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Landing craft head for Juno Beach in northern France on 6th June 1944 in support of the British landings at Sword Beach, packed with Royal Marine Commandos and the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. Aside from their flanking action for the offensive on Caen, their mission was to capture the airfield at Carpiquet, but they would first have to drive through the defenses of two battalions of the German 716th Infantry and elements of the 21st Panzer Division. |
HMS Sirius at Anchor by Ivan Berryman (PC) As dusk falls, a 28ft Pinnace makes its way through mirror-calm waters toward the 36 gun frigate HMS Sirius as she lies at anchor in Plymouth, early in March, 1804. She was lost in 1810 when her crew scuttled her after she grounded during the Battle of Grand Port. |

One Way Trip by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Having strung their deadly payload from the bilge keels of another victim, the two man crew of an Italian SLC, or Maiale, prepare to make their getaway in the murky waters of an Allied harbour in the early part of WW2. Having set clamps on the bilge keels, the nose of the manned torpedo was detached and suspended on a steel cable strung between the clamps. A timer was set in motion and, a little over two hours later, the resulting explosion would rip through the ship's hull. Such was the fate of the British battleships HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Valiant as they lay in the harbour at Alexandria on 3rd December 1941. The fate of the frogmen was rarely a good one, most attacks resulting in almost certain capture - and often death - as there was no way back to the 'mother' submarine and they were forced to make their own way to whatever sanctuary they could find, having completed their audacious mission. |

She is shown here with a pair of Swordfish Mk1s of 821 Sqn ranged on the deck, passing the cruiser HMS Sheffield off the Mole, Gibraltar, earlier that same year. |
HMS Resolution at Gibraltar by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Launched in January 1915, the Revenge-class battleship HMS Resolution was to enjoy a 33 year career during which she served in the Atlantic, home and Eastern Fleets as well as serving repeated spells in the Mediterranean, being both bombed and torpedoed along the way. She is depicted off Gibraltar with HMS Wolverine, the destroyer perhaps best remembered for destroying the U-47 which sunk Resolutions sister ship Royal Oak in Scapa Flow. |
HMS Ramillies by Ivan Berryman. (PC) HMS Ramillies took part in the bombardment of Bardia, August 18th 1940. She also took part in the Battle of Cape Teudada. On the 7th May 1942 in the bombardment of Diego Saurez (Madagascar) it was here she was torpedoed by Japanese midget submarines on the 30th May 1942. After repairs she took part in the bombardment of German positions during D-Day, as well as in August bombardments of Southern France. |
Agamemnon off the Needles by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Considered by Lord Nelson as The finest 64 in the Service - indeed, his favourite ship, HMS Agamemnon was a two-deck third rate warship, lighter and faster than most 74s. Launched at Bucklers Hard in 1781, she saw action in many great battles, among them the Battle of Ushant, the Battle of Copenhagen and Trafalgar, by which time she was a veteran of 24 years service. |
Kapitanleutnant zur See Friedrich Christiansen by Ivan Berryman. (PC) During a patrol on 6th July 1918, Christiansen spotted a British submarine on the surface of the Thames Estuary. He immediately turned and put his Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 floatplane into an attacking dive, raking the submarine C.25 with machine gun fire, killing the captain and five other crewmen. This victory was added to his personal tally, bringing his score to 13 kills by the end of the war, even though the submarine managed to limp back to safety. Christiansen survived the war and went on to work as a pilot for the Dornier company, notably flying the giant Dornier Do.X on its inaugural flight to New York in 1930. He died in 1972, aged 93. |
Tribute to William F Dickson by Ivan Berryman. (PC) 19th July 1918 - the Tondern raid, the first raid in history carried out from an aircraft carrier. Captain Dickson is shown in his Sopwith Camel 2F.1 departing HMS Furious just after 3am, and along with 5 other aircraft would successfully attack the German Zeppelin sheds at Tondern in Denmark. They destroyed two airships in their hangar, and the entire base was subsequently abandoned. 7 aircraft began the raid : one turned back with engine trouble, three landed in Denmark afterwards while another failed to return to the British fleet. Only Dickson and Captain B Smart ditched in the sea near the British ships and were recovered. For this raid, Dickson was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. He later moved to HMS Revenge and HMS Queen Elizabeth then flew on HMS Argus and was a test pilot at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. In World War Two he helped to plan the Allied invasion of occupied Europe. He remained in the RAF post war, retiring in 1959 as Marshal of the Royal Air Force. He died in 1987. |
Tribute to the Crew of HMS Truant by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Commissioned in October 1939, HMS Truant served in the North Sea for almost a year, notably damaging the German cruiser Karlsruhe in one action. Sent to the Mediterranean, Truant sunk several Axis merchant ships here, including the Italian tanker Bonzo depicted in this painting. Tracked off the east coast of Italy in the dark of 15th - 16th December 1940, Bonzo fell prey to one of three torpedoes, and was finished off from close range, sinking rapidly. HMS Truant continued successful patrols in the Med until May 1941, completing an Atlantic crossing for refit in the United States before returning in October that year. Sent to the Far East in 1942, the submarine returned to the UK around the Cape of Good Hope for another refit. Returning to service in UK waters in mid-1943, Truant was again sent to the Far East, making it as far as Malta before turning back with mechanical issues, spending the rest of the war as a trials ship in the United Kingdom. |

(PC) Still wearing her wartime grey paint scheme, but with her funnels newly restored to the Cunard Line’s red and black livery, a slightly war-weary RMS Mauretania II is gently manoeuvred into Liverpool Docks in 1946 after an Atlantic crossing from Halifax. The tug Aysgarth is preparing to assist with final docking. |
