HMS Cyclops Prepares to Receive HMS Sceptre by Ivan Berryman Originally constructed as a Home Fleet Repair Ship, HMS Cyclops was later converted into a submarine depot ship and enjoyed a long career, both in the Mediterranean and in home waters. Exchange of Fire by Ivan Berryman. A veteran of the Spanish Civil War, Lieutenant Commander Carlo Fecia Conte di Cossato was one of the most successful and formidable Italian submarine commanders of WWII. In charge of the Tazzoli , he destroyed almost 18,000 tons of shipping on his first mission, steadily adding to this total as they prowled the Atlantic. The Tazzoli is depicted as its tenacious crew retaliate with machine gun fire against a marauding Bristol Beaufort of 217 Sqn on 23rd May 1941, an encounter that left both protagonists with some damage. |
HMS Triumph by Ivan Berryman. Built in Barrow-in-Furness and the 7th and last of the Trafalgar class of British submarines, HMS Triumph is one of the most modern and potent vessels of her kind. Selected in March 2011 to take part in the coalition suppression of Colonel Gadaffi's attacks against his own people, HMS Triumph fired a number of TLAMs (Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles) aimed at air defence targets on the Libyan mainland at the outset of coalition operations, helping to reduce the threat of air attacks by the Libyan Air Force. |

Trafalgar: HMS Royal Sovereign Prepares to Break the Line by Ivan Berryman. Just minutes from opening fire, HMS Royal Sovereign, carrying the flag of Vice-Admiral Lord Cuthbert Collingwood, approaches the Franco-Spanish line at Trafalgar, prior to breaking through and delivering a devastating broadside into the black-painted Santa Ana. Royal Sovereign had already taken terrible punishment as it had approached the enemy line, unable to bring her own guns to bear. Trafalgar- The Destruction of The Bucentaure by Ivan Berryman. With her mizzen top already gone and her sails aloft having received severe punishment, Victory breaks through the line behind the French flagship Bucentaure, delivering a shattering broadside into her stern. So severe was this opening fire that the Bucentaure was effectively put out of the rest of the battle, although Admiral Villeneuve himself was to miraculously survive the carnage. Beyong Victory can be seen the French Redoubtable, which is receiving fire from Victorys starboard guns, and the Spanish San Leandro is in the extreme distance. Most of Victorys stunsails have been cut away, but it was her stunsail booms that became entangled with the rigging of the Redoubtable when she put her helm to port and ran onto her. Admiral Nelson fell shortly afterward, having received a fatal wound from a musket ball fired by a French sharpshooter in Redoubtables mizzen fighting top. The Temeraire can be seen approaching the fray to the right. |
SS Great Britain Off Cowes by Ivan Berryman. One of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's most elegant designs, the 322ft long SS Great Britain of 1843 was the first ocean-going vessel to be made entirely of metal and also the first to be propeller-driven. She enjoyed a long and varied career before being abandoned as a hulk in the Falkland Islands at the end of the 1800s. In 1970, she was brought home to Bristol where she was fully restored and can be visited today. She is depicted in the Cowes Roads after her epic rounding of The Lizard on her maiden voyage, during which she had encountered - and survived - a violent storm. |

On the Step by Ivan Berryman. The mainstay of the Royal Navy's Coastal Forces fleet from 1941, the 72-foot Vosper MTBs were among the fastest and most successful ever built. With their three Packard 1400hp engines and bigger fuel tanks, these boats could reach speeds of up to 39 knots with a maximum range of 400 miles. Armament varied from boat to boat, but those depicted are fitted with the standard 21-inch torpedo tubes and a twin .5 inch MkV Vickers machine gun mounting. Crew was typically two officers and eleven ratings. |
The Battle of the Nile by Ivan Berryman. Sunset over Aboukir Bay on 1st August 1798 as ships of the Royal Navy, led by Nelson, conduct their ruthless destruction of the anchored French fleet. To the left Saumarezs HMS Orion is moving into position on the Peuple Souvrain, while her starboard guns rake one of the French frigates inshore. Orion, like the Goliath, Zealous and Audacious, had slipped inside the line of the unprepared French fleet, while Nelson in the Vanguard directed a further eight ships to attack the outside, resulting in one of the most decisive naval victories ever. The French ships seen at anchor include Spartiate and Aquilon, whilst through the gap between Peuple Souvrain and the bowsprit of the Franklin, the British ships Defence and Minotaur can be seen approaching. |
Becalmed - HMS Victory in the Doldrums by Ivan Berryman. Two of Admiral Horatio Nelson's ships lie becalmed together, bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun. The 74-gun HMS Captain basks ahead of the mighty HMS Victory, the ship that would ultimately lead the British fleet into battle against the combined might of the Spanish and French fleets at Trafalgar in 1805. |
HMS Dorsetshire by Ivan Berryman. The heavy cruiser HMS Dorsetshire is brought up to sink the blazing wreck of the Bismarck with torpedoes at around 10:30 hours on the morning of May 27th 1941. The once proud German ship had been ruthlessly pounded into a twisted and burning wreck by the British battleships Rodney and King George V. HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Maori combed the area of the sinking for survivors, between them picking up a total of 110 out of an original complement of 2,300. |
HMS Royal Sovereign at the Battle of Trafalgar by Ivan Berryman. Midday, 21st October 1805, and Admiral Collingwoods flagship, the 100-gun HMS Royal Sovereign, breaks the allied line and delivers a shattering broadside on the Spanish flagship Santa Ana. Making great speed, Collingwoods ship had breached the Franco-Spanish line some distance ahead of the rest of his van and the Royal Sovereign suffered heavily as she quickly drew the attentions of three French and three Spanish ships. To her starboard, the French Indomitable can be seen firing into the British flagship while, astern of the Santa Ana, Belleisle and Fougueux are engaging ahead of Mars, Monarca and Pluton. |
HMS Coventry by Ivan Berryman. HMS Coventry comes under air attack from aircraft off Tobruk, 14th September 1942. As well as losing the anti-aircraft cruiser HMS Coventry, the Allies also lost HMS Zulu and six coastal craft sunk by bombing as they were returning from Tobruk. HMS Coventry was rated as one of the most effective anti-aircraft ships in the entire British navy, downing more aircraft than any other ship. |

HMS Victory by Ivan Berryman. Arguably the best known warship in the world, and one of only a few survivors of her era, HMS Victory was the flagship of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson at Trafalgar in 1805, leading the victorious British fleet into battle against the combined French and Spanish navies. Severely damaged during the battle, she remained afloat at Portsmouth into the 20th century and is now preserved there in dry dock for future generations to visit. Extraordinarily, HMS Victory is still a commissioned ship in the Royal Navy and is frequently used for ceremonial duties. |
HMS Vanguard by Ivan Berryman. Nelsons Flagship Vanguard is seen departing St Helens Anchorage heading a convoy of merchantmen en route to Lisbon and the Mediterranean on 8th April 1798. This voyage would culminate in the Battle of the Nile where the British fleet routed that of the French at Aboukir Bay on the evening of 1st August that same year. |
