Concorde Farewell by Ivan Berryman.

A sad, but magnificent sight on 24th October 2003 as the last three British Airways Concordes bring commercial supersonic travel to a close, as they taxi together to their final dispersal at Heathrow.

Richard Bong by Ivan Berryman.

The highest scoring US pilot of the Second World War, Richard Bong, is depicted in his personal P.38J Marge, claiming just one of his 40 confirmed victories. Insisting that he was not the greatest of marksmen, it was Bongs habit to manoeuvre to impossibly close distances before opening fire on his opponents. His eventual total may well have been greater than 40, as a further 8 probables could be attributed to him, together with 7 damaged. He was killed whilst testing a P.80 jet for the USAF in August 1945.

Last One Away by Ivan Berryman.

A Lancaster of No.15 Squadron takes to the air at the start of a night sortie from Mildenhall in June 1944.

Snowbound - Tribute to No.439 Sqn RCAF by Ivan Berryman.

On finals, Hawker Typhoon PD608 (5V-G) of 439 Sqn drifts over the threshold at a forward airstrip in Belgium after a mission during the winter of 1945. RB326 is waiting to take off, whilst others taxi in to their dispersal.

Moment of Truth by Ivan Berryman. (P)

The 617 Sqn Lancaster of Guy Gibson (G for George) thunders over the Mohne Dam on the first attack run of the Dambusters raid, 16th - 17th May 1943. After several attacks on the dam, it was finally breached by the innovative bouncing bomb designed by Barnes-Wallis.

Last One Home by Ivan Berryman.

A pair of P51D Mustangs of the 361st Fighter Group, 8th Air Force, escort a damaged B17G Flying Fortress of the 381st Bomb Group back to its home base of Ridgewell, England, during the Autumn of 1944.

Escorting Blenheims to Le Trait - Spitfire W3455 of No.610 Squadron by Ivan Berryman. (P)

Spitfire DW-U (W3455) of 610 Squadron escorting Blenheims to Le Trait on 21st August 1941. This aircraft was shot down by enemy fighters on this mission.

The Blackest Friday by Ivan Berryman.

Following intelligence reports that the German destroyer Z.33 was anchored in Forde Fjord, Norway, together with a selection of minesweepers, tugs and trawlers, Beaufighters of 144, 404 and 455 Sqns were at once scrambled to attack the shipping, fully expecting their assault to take the Germans by surprise. Quite the contrary transpired to be true however and the attacking Beaufighters had to fly through a hail of flak and anti aircraft fire to line up on their targets. Moreover, Focke-Wulf 190s of 9/JG 5 joined the melee and a frantic battle ensued. Here, one Beaufighter has become a victim of an Fw.190, whilst a 144 Sqn aircraft tries to make a low level escape, close to the forbidding Fjord rock face.

Menace - Heinkel 219A-7/R2 by Ivan Berryman.

One of the most effective night fighters of WWII, Heinkel's extraordinary 219 'Uhu' (Owl) was designed from the outset as a highly specialized type, originally conceived as a multi-role aircraft, but eventually entering service purely in the nocturnal role. Equipped with the very latest in airborne radar and heavily armed, the 219s became the scourge of the skies against Allied night bombers until it met its match in the form of the night fighter Mosquito. This example is from Stab I/NJG 1, flown by Hauptmann Paul Forster during 1944.

Tugs of War (Stirling & Gliders) by Ivan Berryman.

Wearing the distinctive black and white identification stripes of the D-Day operations of June 1944, Airspeed Horsa MkII assault gliders, towed by their Short Stirling MkIV tugs of No.620 Squadron, make their way across a moody English Channel en route to Normandy during the tumultuous Operation Overlord.

Capitaine Rene Fonck by Ivan Berryman.

The highest scoring allied ace of World War 1, Rene Fonck was born on 27th March 1894 and spent his early military service with the 11th Regiment of Engineers before being sent for flying instruction in the spring of 1915. Almost as soon as he had been assigned to combat duties, he began to score and was posted to Groupe de Combat No12, the famous Storks where a combination of superb airmanship and deadly accurate gunnery ensured that his victory tally continued to grow. By the end of the war, Fonck was credited with a commendable 75 confirmed victories, but it is likely that he may have been responsible for a further possible 69 kills, which would have taken his total score to 144 - 64 more than Manfred von Richthofen, the notorious Red Baron. Capitaine Rene Fonck is shown in one of his Spad S.XIIIs chasing down a DFW C-Type.

Lieutenant Reginald Warneford by Ivan Berryman.

Having successfully weaved and dodged the hail of bullets from the defensive guns of the German Zeppelin, Lieutenant Warneford climbed above the giant airship and prepared for a run along the full length of the LZ.37 in the hope that his 20lb bombs would turn it into an inferno and bring it down. Warneford had time to release all six of his bombs, the last of which set off a chain of eruptions that resulted in the Zeppelin breaking its back before plunging to earth in a fireball. So violent was the initial explosion that Warnefords tiny Morane Saulnier Type L was flipped over and thrust 200ft into the air above the disintegrating leviathan. Warneford survived this historic interception, whilst the LZ.37 plunged to the ground near Ghent and was completely destroyed. This was the first time that a Zeppelin had been brought down by an aircraft for which gallant action, Warneford was awarded the Victoria Cross. Special mention should be made of the roundels on the Type L, where the original French examples were not overpainted to British colours on the wings, unlike those on the fuselage sides.

Tribute to Ferdinand West VC by Ivan Berryman.

Known as Freddie, West was the first pilot of the newly formed Royal Air Force to be awarded the Victoria Cross. He is shown here during a bombing mission to Merricourt on 19th June 1918. Jumped by enemy fighters, he was forced to evade his assailants by weaving through German barrage balloons. Successfully shaking off the Fokkers in Armstrong-Whitworth FK.8 C8594, he continued to his intended target. Less than two months later, and in a similar aircraft, he undertook the mission which earned him his VC, but cost him an amputated leg. He remained in the RAF until the end of World War Two and lived until 1988, aged 92.

Ltn Fritz Kempf by Ivan Berryman.

The Fokker DR.1 Triplane (213/17) of Fritz Kempf swoops on a pair of unsuspecting Sopwith Camels whilst on patrol over the Western Front in 1917. Kempfs practise of having his name painted across the top wing of his aircraft was supplemented by the taunt Do You Remember Me? on the mid wing. His aircraft is depicted in the colours worn by Jasta Boelcke of the Imperial Air Service.

Revenge of the Raider by Ivan Berryman.

The 79 Sqn Hurricane Mk.I P3877 of P/O E J Morris receiving hits from a Dornier 17 on 31st August 1940. Morris was forced to crash land his aircraft and was slightly wounded following the combat.

Dinah Might by Ivan Berryman.

6th June, 1944 - D-Day - and Martin B.26 Marauders of the 386th Bomb Group, 553rd Bomb Squadron are among the first aircraft to bomb the beaches in readiness for the Normandy landings on that momentous day. Shown softening up the enemy gun emplacements on a low level run over Utah Beach is 131576 AN-Z, now on display at the Utah Beach Museum.

Vulcan at Ascension, 1982 by Ivan Berryman. (P)

During the Falklands conflict in 1982, the tiny mid-Atlantic volcanic island of Ascension became the starting point for the Black Buck missions - a relay of tanker aircraft refueling two Vulcan bombers to attack Argentine positions and damage the runway at Port Stanley to prevent the use of fast jets. At the time these were the longest range bombing missions in history.

Major Albert Carter by Ivan Berryman.

The Sopwith Dolphin was a radical departure from previous Sopwith design philosophies, embodying a reverse-stagger on the wings, a water-cooled Hispano-Suiza engine and an unusual, but highly popular positioning of the cockpit which gave the pilot unprecedented views. One exponent of this purposeful looking machine was Canadian Major A D Carter who claimed many of his 31 victories flying the Dolphin. He is shown here sending an Albatross to the ground on 8th May 1918 whilst flying C4017. Carter was himself shot down soon after became a prisoner of war. He was killed in 1919 whilst test flying a Fokker D.VII at Shoreham, Sussex.

Tribute to Capitano Carlo Maurizio Ruspoli by Ivan Berryman.

Born in 1906, Carlo Maurizio Ruspoli di Poggio Suasa is recorded as being probably the oldest Italian fighter pilot to become an ace, serving both in the North Africa campaign and on the Russian front, as depicted here, claiming a Polikarpov I.16. He ended the war with a victory total of 10 confirmed aircraft destroyed and died in 1947.

The Thoroughbred by Ivan Berryman.

Allied fighters encountering Focke-Wulfs potent Fw190 were to find themselves alarmingly outclassed when first the Luftwaffes new fighter appeared in the skies above France in 1941. Even the Spitfire MkV struggled to match the Butcher Birds outstanding performance. However, the inception of the Spitfire MkIX was to rapidly redress the balance and represented, in many ways, the coming of age for this classic British fighter, final production of this mark alone totalling 5665 machines.
