Vulcan prototypes and Avro 707s flown together in 1951.

British Airways Boeing 747-400 by Ivan Berryman.

British Airways has the largest fleet of Boeing 747-400's with 50 in service. A total of 694 747-400's have been built with the first rolled out in January 1988 with its certification being received on January 10th 1989.

Raid on the Tirpitz by Ivan Berryman.

On 12th November 1944, the mighty Tirpitz was finally destroyed by a combined force of Lancasters from No 9 and No 617 Squadrons. LM220, an aircraft of 9 Sqn is shown here making its run toward the target at approximately 09.40 hours on that fateful day.

Photo Reconnaissance Mosquito by Ivan Berryman.

One of the most versatile British aircraft of the second world war, the Mosquito was employed in many roles during the war, including as seen here, in photo reconnaissance.

Tribute to Franz Schieß by Ivan Berryman.

Scoring his first victories on the Eastern Front with JG53, Franz Schieß was posted with his squadron to the Mediterranean from December 1941. He shot down aircraft consistently through 1942, operating from Sicily then Tunisia. He achieved his 50th victory in May 1943, claiming one of his eventual unsurpassed tally of 17 P-38 Lightnings. Awarded the Knight's Cross in June 1943, he was sent on leave for two months but returned in August, claiming 12 victories in 11 days. On 2nd September 1943, he was killed when his Me109 crashed into the sea during combat with P-38 Lightnings. He was credited with 67 victories in more than 650 missions.

Tribute to George Kemp 'Sheep' Gilroy by Ivan Berryman.

George Gilroy was a highly decorated World War Two pilot who acquired the nickname Sheep from his pre-war work as a shepherd. Flying with No.603 Sqn, he shared in 8 aircraft destroyed and claimed 3 victories of his own with the squadron. With No.609 Sqn he claimed another 4 victories before moving to command 324 Wing. Here, his score continued to climb and he was finally credited with 14 victories and another 14 shared with another dozen or so claimed damaged or probably destroyed. He is seen here in his No.603 Sqn Spitfire XT-N X4271 in which he claimed Me109s on the 28th and 31st August 1940. This Spitfire crashed in Wanstead after he baled out on 31st August - he was hospitalised by a crowd who mistook him for a German pilot in this incident.

Sous-Lieutenant Willy Coppens - Roasting A Sausage by Ivan Berryman.

During an amazing spree of balloon-busting during 1918, Willy Coppens gained notoriety over the Western Front for his sheer daring and marksmanship, sending no fewer than 35 observation balloons plummeting to the ground, as well as two aircraft. Here, Coppens despatches a Drachen balloon flying his modified Hanriot HD.1 No23 which he had painted blue because he so disliked the ugly, bad camouflage in which it was delivered. Despite losing a leg whilst downing his final two balloons, Coppens survived the war and lived a full life until his death in December 1986.

Tribute to the Flying Cheetahs by Ivan Berryman.

Lt Hinton Horscroft is depicted getting airborne from Seoul, Korea, in P.51D 369 of the South African Air Force. Lt Horscroft survived the war in Korea and completed 75 missions with No.2 Sqn South African Air Force, known as the 'Flying Cheetahs', before returning safely to his home and family in Durban.

Bowing Out (Shackleton) by Ivan Berryman.

The remarkable Avro Shackleton provided the RAF with stalwart service for no less than 43 years. These charming giants lumbering into the 1990s and into the hearts of literally thousands of servicemen, ex-servicemen and enthusiasts alike before finally signing off in July 1991. This is AEW.2 WL757 Brian based at Lossiemouth. The last RAF unit to operate the Shackleton before its replacement with the long overdue Boeing Sentry AEW. An appealing and emotive painting of one of British aviations most charismatic aeroplanes.

Spitfire Alley by Ivan Berryman.

A pair of Spitfire Mk.IXs of 402 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force, based at Kenley, practise combat manoeuvres in the skies above Kent in May, 1943.

Ace of Burma - Tribute to Wing Commander Frank Carey by Ivan Berryman.

Having been posted to help relieve the pressure on the Allied forces in Burma, Frank Carey's 135 Sqn found themselves immediately in action against the Japanese. On 29th January 1942, Carey's first victim was the Nakajima Ki.27 'Nate' of Sgt-Maj Nagashima of the 77th Sentai, his aircraft falling close to the RAF airfield at Mingaladon Township, Rangoon. The following month, Carey scored again, claiming three more confirmed Ki.27s, a reconnaissance aircraft, a transport aircraft and another Ki.27.

The First Ace - Max Immelmann by Ivan Berryman.

Perhaps the greatest exponent of Fokker's Eindecker series of aircraft, Max Immelmann is credited with 15 aerial victories and was the first fighter pilot ever to win the coveted Pour le Mérite. He was killed on 18th June 1916 during combat with British FE.2B fighters of 25 Sqn.

Third Time Lucky by Ivan Berryman.

Standing his aircraft at the height of just 60 feet above the waters of the Mohne, Flt Lt Maltby braves a hail of anti-aircraft fire just seconds before the release of the bouncing bomb that would at last breach the dam on that historic night of the 16th/17th May 1943.

One to One by Ivan Berryman.

A Messerschmitt BF109 E of JG27 closes on a 501 squadron Hawker Hurricane during the typical combat in the skies over southern England during the Battle of Britain, in the summer of 1940.

No.214 Sqn Lincoln by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Too late to enter service in WW2 as a replacement for the Lancaster, the Avro Lincoln found much gainful employment in the post war years and was popular with its crews. Here, Lincoln II RE301 of 214 Sqn based at RAF Upwood in Huntingdonshire returns home over the East Anglian countryside in 1950.

Sabre's Edge - Tribute to Edwin L 'Ed' Heller by Ivan Berryman.

Already an ace in WWII, Ed Heller was again to find himself involved in aerial combat during the conflict in Korea, now flying the mighty F-86 Sabre with the 25th FIS, 51st FIW against the potent MiG15. Moving to 16th FIS as Squadron Commander, he was to claim 3.5 victories over MiGs before being shot down himself in January 1953. His release from captivity by the Chinese did not occur until two years after the war ended but, upon repatriation, he returned to the air flying F-100s during the Cuban Missile Crisis, finally retiring in 1967. He is depicted here in Hell-er Bust X, claiming a MiG 15.

Avenger's Return by Ivan Berryman.

On 24th January 1945, whilst taking part in Operation Meridian, S/Lt Arthur Page's Grumman Avenger JZ469 of 849 NAS suffered an electrical fire whilst climbing toward the target in formation and the decision was made to abort the mission and make an emergency landing back on HMS Victorious. Page's aircraft is shown here moments before touchdown under the watchful eye of the Landing Signals Officer.

Viceless Lady by Ivan Berryman. (GS)

A Fairey Swordfish launches from the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Eagle in 1939. HMS Eagle would later fall victim to German U-boat U-73 on 11th August 1942.

The Night They Broke the Dams - Operation Chastise by Ivan Berryman.

Guy Gibsons Lancaster having unsuccessfully dropped its bomb, draws enemy fire from the aircraft of Sqn Ldr Young as his bomb explodes spectacularly on the Mohne Dam during the audacious Dams Raids of 16th/17th May 1943.

Outnumbered by Ivan Berryman.

On 1st February 1918, the great Austro-Hungarian ace Godwin von Brumowski found himself abandoned by his wingmen and left to fight off eight Sopwith Camels of 45 Sqn RFC single handed. On this occasion, it was he that came off the worst, managing to nurse his badly damaged Albatros D.III (Oef) 153.45 back to base, the aircraft becoming engulfed in flames at some point, probably due to a hit in the fuel tank. The fuselage of his machine was riddled with 26 bullet holes and the fabric of the wings was punctured and shredded, but he continued the fight until his guns jammed and he was forced to break away. Undaunted, the Ace was back in the air the next day, only to have these dreadful events repeat themselves just three days later, Brumowski again nursing his shattered aircraft home.
