Harrier GR.9 by Ivan Berryman. Essentially an upgrade of the proven Harrier GR.7 as part of a £500m programme, the GR.9's final combat theatre was in the Ground Attack role in Afghanistan, as shown here, releasing a pair of AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missiles. |
Undetected by Ivan Berryman. En route to the Ruhr Dams on the night of 16/17 May 1943, P/O W C Townsend, demonstrating great skill, flew his aircraft, ED886(G) 'O'- Orange below tree-top height through a forest firetrap on his way to the Ennepe Dam, a feat carried out by moonlight alone. AJ-O made it successfully to its target where the Upkeep bomb was observed to hit the dam, but with no effect, before returning safely to base the following morning. |
A Day for Heroes by Ivan Berryman. The afternoon of 25th July 1940 was a desperate one for the already exhausted fighter pilots of the RAF defending the South coast of England. As convoy CW8 made its way through the English Channel, sixty JU.87 Stukas and forty JU.88 bombers launched a brutal attack on the ships below, backed up by fighter cover of over 50 Messerscmitt Bf.109s. Eight Spitfires of 64 Sqn (Kenley) were scrambled, together with twelve Spitfires of 54 Sqn (Hornchurch) and Hurricanes of 111 Sqn from Croydon. The British pilots found themselves massively outnumbered, but nevertheless put up a spirited fight against the teeming enemy. This painting shows Spitfires of 54 Sqn entering the fray, the pilots scattering as they choose their targets and go after the JU.87s. To the right of this, Bf.109Es of JG.26 are roaring in to join battle, whilst Adolf Galland's aircraft engages a Hurricane of 111 Sqn. |

Tribute to David Lee 'Tex' Hill by Ivan Berryman. One of America's best known Aces, 'Tex' Hill scored his first victories in 1942 with the American Volunteer Group (AVG) known as the Flying Tigers. In his P-40 Warhawk, he was credited with 12 and a quarter victories while flying in aid of the Chinese against the Japanese, including the Ki.27 'Nate' depicted here. After the AVG was disbanded, he scored 6 more victories flying P-51 Mustangs with the USAAF. Tex Hill died in 2007 aged 92. |
Crop Culture - Tiger Moth by Ivan Berryman. Tiger Moth sprays a potato field in southern England, early 1960s. Australian-born Jim, served during World War II on B.25 Mitchell bombers before pioneering crop dusting and topdressing in New Zealand with ex-military De Havilland Tiger Moths which he converted himself for the purpose. He went on to form a company called Crop Culture, which specialised in aerial spraying equipment, both in New Zealand and in the UK, before becoming a partner in the newly-formed Britten-Norman aircraft company which produced the Islander and Trislander utility transport aircraft in England. |

Zerstörer Break by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Just how vulnerable the pilot and observer of a Messerschmitt Bf.110 were during the early stages of the war is ably demonstrated in this view from the cockpit of a Bf.110C-2 of 1/ZG 52, based at Charleville during the Battle of France in June 1940. Later versions featured an armoured seat and head protection for the pilot. |

High Pursuit by Ivan Berryman. Squadron Leader H C Sawyer is depicted here flying his 65 Sqn Spitfire Mk.1a R6799 (YT-D) in the skies above Kent on 31st July 1940 at the height of the Battle of Britain. Chasing him is Major Hans Trubenbach of 1 Gruppe, Lehrgeschwader 2 in his Messerschmitt Vf109E-3 (Red 12) . The encounter lasted eight minutes with both pilots surviving. |
The Fledgling by Ivan Berryman. Under the watchful eye of his more experienced tutor a trainee pilot gets his first taste of the Spitfire Mk.IIa, airborne from Tangmere early in 1941. The nearest aircraft is P7856 (YT-C) which enjoyed a long career, surviving until 1945. |
The Long Way Home by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On the night of 12/13th August 1942, Short Stirling RF325 was attacked by a Bf.110 night fighter over the Ardennes in Belgium whilst returning from a bombing raid. Damaged and low on fuel, Sqn Ldr G A Watt nursed his stricken aircraft across the English Channel before making a forced landing at Broadstairs in Kent. This was a scenario faced by hundreds of Bomber Command aircrew throughout World War II and this painting is intended as a tribute to them all, symbolising the loneliness and vulnerability of the heavy bomber as it went about its unenviable task on an almost nightly basis and in the face of impossible odds. |
Tribute to Pete Brothers by Ivan Berryman. Pete Brothers is shown here in his Hurricane P2921 GZ-L of No.32 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. In one of 8 victories claimed before September 1940, he has peppered a marauding German Dornier Do.215, its port engine now trailing smoke and flame. In this incident, he had been attacked by Me110s and had stalled while turning to meet them. Spinning out of the stall he immediately sighted, engaged and shot down the Do.215. He claimed an Me109 later the same day. Pete Brothers is credited with a total of 16 victories during World War Two. He died aged 91 in December 2008. |
Tribute to Flying Officer Count Manfred Beckett Czernin by Ivan Berryman. Serving with distinction throughout the Battle of Britain, Count Manfred Beckett Czernin's score included 13 confirmed, 2 unconfirmed, 3 probables and 5 damaged. He is depicted here on 25th July 1940, claiming the last of three Messerschmitt Bf.110s that he shot down that day, flying Hurricane V7408 (YB-F) whilst with 17 Sqn. Despite being shot down by Adolf Galland in November, he survived the war and passed away in 1962 having been awarded a DFC, an MC and DSO. |

Tribute to Franz Schieß by Ivan Berryman. Scoring his first victories on the Eastern Front with JG53, Franz Schieß was posted with his squadron to the Mediterranean from December 1941. He shot down aircraft consistently through 1942, operating from Sicily then Tunisia. He achieved his 50th victory in May 1943, claiming one of his eventual unsurpassed tally of 17 P-38 Lightnings. Awarded the Knight's Cross in June 1943, he was sent on leave for two months but returned in August, claiming 12 victories in 11 days. On 2nd September 1943, he was killed when his Me109 crashed into the sea during combat with P-38 Lightnings. He was credited with 67 victories in more than 650 missions. |
Chadwick's Masterpiece by Ivan Berryman. When Roy Chadwick first drew the Avro 679 Manchester bomber for the RAF, he could little have known that from this rather lacklustre machine would evolve the classic 683 Lancaster. This painting is not a record of any single event in the Lancaster's illustrious history, rather a portrait of a fine aeroplane and a tribute to the many crews who flew and serviced them. |
Tribute to the Flying Cheetahs by Ivan Berryman. Lt Hinton Horscroft is depicted getting airborne from Seoul, Korea, in P.51D 369 of the South African Air Force. Lt Horscroft survived the war in Korea and completed 75 missions with No.2 Sqn South African Air Force, known as the 'Flying Cheetahs', before returning safely to his home and family in Durban. |

Kiwis at Dallachy - Tribute to No.489 Squadron by Ivan Berryman. The formation of six New Zealand squadrons within the RAF in the early part of WW2 acknowledged the contribution and commitment of the Commonwealth to the campaign against the Nazi invasion of Europe. Among these was 489 Sqn, based at Dallachy in Scotland, whose Beaufighter Mk Xs flew missions against Axis shipping in the North Sea as well as other missions along the Scandinavian coast. Here, two 489 Sqn Beaufighters run up their engines prior to a sortie in the Winter of 1943/44. |
