3 Squadron Hurricanes by Ivan Berryman. Hurricanes of No.3 Squadron on patrol. MkIIc variants, characterised by the four Hispano or Oerlikon cannon housed in the wings. No 3 Sqn were engaged in night fighter activities during the Spring of 1941. |
The Attack on Villers Bocage by Ivan Berryman. Lancasters of No.15 Squadron are shown releasing their bombs during the attack against German armour that had amassed in and near the French village of Villers Bocage on 30th June 1944. ED395 (LS-M), piloted by Fl Off W Hall, is in the background with LM473 (LS-P) in the foreground, flown by Fl Sgt N Overend. The village was almost completely obliterated during the bombing raid and the operation was deemed a tactical success. |
A Friend in Need by Ivan Berryman. 146 Wing Hawker Typhoons were busy throughout the winter of 1944 / 45, carrying out a wide variety of missions and operations using a combination of rockets and bombs. Here, Wing Commander J R Baldwin OC of 146 Wing escorts a damaged wingman home as they enter the holding pattern to begin finals into their base at Antwerp. Baldwin's aircraft is Mk 1B PD521, carrying his personal markings JBII on the nose. |
Oberleutnant Erich Lowenhardt by Ivan Berryman. Erich Lowenhardt was already the holder of the Knights Cross 1st and 2nd Class for acts of bravery even before becoming a pilot. After serving as an observer for a year, he was eventually posted to Jasta 10 in 1917 where he immediately began to score victories, sending down balloons and enemy aircraft at a fearsome rate. He was appointed Commander of Jasta 10 one week before his 21st birthday, making him one the youngest pilots to rise to such a rank in the German Army Air Service. He continued to increase his score steadily throughout 1917 and 1918, but was involved in a mid-air collision with a Jasta 11 aircraft on 10th August. Lowenhardt elected to abandon his aircraft, but his parachute failed to deploy and the young ace fell to his death. He flew a number of aircraft, but this yellow-fuselaged Fokker D.VII was his most distinctive and is believed to be the aircraft in which he was killed. His final victory total was 54. |

Tribute to Sqn Ldr Eugeniusz Horbaczewski by Ivan Berryman. On 16 February 1944 Horbaczewski took command of the Polish No. 315 Squadron, flying the new P-51 Mustang Mk. III. On 12 June 1944 he shot down a FW 190, and on 30 July one Bf 109 individually and one with his wingman (counted as a 0.5 'share'). |
No Contest by Ivan Berryman. Whilst attacking a temporary airfield North of Stendal on 22nd April 1945, a group of 198 Sqn Typhoons led by Sqn Ldr N J Durrant were surprised to find themselves confronted by that rarest of fighters, Focke-Wulf's awesome Ta.152, one of them piloted by the great Willi Reschke of Stab / JG301, flying 'Black 13'. In the words of Sqn Ldr Durrant: 'The first wave of Typhoons had broken up the airfield surface with 500lb bombs and started some fires. I spotted some of the enemy trying to get airborne through the smoke and as I made a low pass, another Focke-Wulf passed me from behind at great speed. Thinking this would be an easy 'kill', I fired a short burst, but the enemy was gone. I remember thinking that there must be something wrong with my own machine because I felt like I was standing still. Only later did I learn what we had encountered. Thank God the war ended when it did.' |
A Busy Day at the Office by Ivan Berryman. The leadership qualities and grim determination of Squadron Leader J R Baldwin was seldom better demonstrated that when he led a small flight of Hawker Typhoons against a force of some thirty Focke-Wulf Fw.190s in January 1944. Nine of the German aircraft were shot down that day, Baldwin himself being responsible for two of them. He is shown here in Typhoon PR-A of No.609 Squadron. |
D-Day Invasion : Tribute to the Glider Troops by Ivan Berryman. A tribute to the glider crews and airborne troops who participated in the glider operations during D-Day. The British Horsa glider (known as the flying coffin) was used by British, Canadian and American airborne forces during the invasion. Approximately 100 glider pilots were killed or wounded during the D-Day operations. |
Victory Above Dover by Ivan Berryman. Adolf Galland claimed his 16th victory on the afternoon of 25th July 1940 when Spitfires of 54 Sqn were bounced by Messerschmitt Bf.109s of Gallands III/JG26. A fierce battle ensued off Dover during which F/Lt Basil Wonky Way, flying R6707, found himself the subject of the great German aces attention, his stricken aircraft being observed to plunge into the sea after receiving numerous hits from the Bf.109s guns. F/Lt Way lost his life in the crash, presumed drowned. |
USS America by Ivan Berryman. A Vought A-7 Corsair of VA-146 makes its final approach to the sprawling deck of the USS America, (CVA-66) as she skirts Vietnamese waters in company with a little Rock-class missile / command cruiser. The A-7 became the Navys prime weapon toward the end of the war, playing a vital role in the anti-radiation Linebacker Raids. |
Guardians of the Beaches by Ivan Berryman. Seen here in company with other 485 Sqn machines, Spitfire Mk.IXc ML407 is depicted over the Normandy beaches shortly after D-Day. Flown by New Zealander Fl Lt Johnnie Houlton, this aircraft claimed a Ju.88 on 6th June and shared in the destruction of another on the same day. Coded 'V' in honour of his wife, Vickie, ML407 is still flying today, now converted to a two-seater and regularly displayed by Carolyn Grace. |
Raining Fire by Ivan Berryman. Flying impossibly low en route to the Sorpe Dam on the night of 16th/17th May 1943 as part of Operation Chastise, Flight Sergeant Ken Brown's Lancaster ED918(G) encountered a number of German trains. On three occasions, AJ-F's nose and tail gunners (Sgt D Allaston, front and F/Sgt G S MacDonald, rear) opened fire, pouring shells and hot tracer rounds into the lumbering locomotive and its rolling stock, wreaking havoc along the way. ED918(G) eventually arrived at the Sorpe Dam at 3.00am where it successfully released its Upkeep bomb, but without breaching the dam. Brown and his crew returned safely, their aircraft riddled with holes, perhaps partially due to their route home taking them over the breached Mohne Dam, where they briefly exchanged gunfire with the German batteries there. |
Tragedy Over the Alps by Ivan Berryman. On the night of 13th August 1943, Short Stirling EF452 of 218 Sqn was part of a bombing raid to Turino in Italy. As the Squadron cleared the Alps the tail gunner of one of the aircraft mistook EF452 for an enemy fighter and immediately opened fire with great accuracy. The windshield fragmented and was partially blasted away, 3 engines were hit and one had to be shut down. The Navigator was hit and killed, the pilot was severely wounded taking hits in the face, right arm and chest, the bomb aimer and flight engineer were also wounded. The Flight Engineer pulled the slumped pilot off the controls and managed to pull the aircraft out of its dive at approximately 4000 feet. The Bomb Aimer took over the controls and turned south over the Mediterranean for another allied airfield knowing the aircraft wouldn’t be able to climb back over the Alps. Although grievously wounded, the young Pilot assisted the Bomb Aimer as best he could, slipping in and out of consciousness and scribbling notes, as his jaw was broken. The Bomb Aimer managed to crash land with the landing gear up on the airfield at Bone, Algeria. The brave young pilot who refused to be treated, succumbed to his wounds later that afternoon. Pilot Flight Sergeant Arthur Louis Aaron DFM was awarded the Victoria Cross, whilst RCAF Bomb Aimer Flight Sergeant Alan William Jessup Larden was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying) and Flight Engineer Sergeant Malcolm Mitchem was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. |
Leutnant Werner Voss by Ivan Berryman. Aircraft of Jasta 10 prepare to taxi out for a dawn patrol, led by the fearless Leutnant Werner Voss in his Fokker F1 103/17 in September 1917. Arguments still rage concerning the colour of the engine cowling on his Triplane. Certainly, when the aircraft was delivered, its upper surfaces were painted factory finish streaked green and, it is recorded that it was flown as delivered with Voss personal mechanic noting that no extra painting was undertaken, aside from Voss Japanese kite face which occupied the nose. However, research shows that by the time of Voss death on 23rd September 1917, after his epic battle with SE5s of 56 Sqn, the cowling was probably yellow in keeping with all Jasta 10 aircraft. Renowned by pilots from both sides for his bravery and extraordinary abilities with his diminutive Triplane, the young ace scored a total of 48 confirmed victories before being brought down by Lieutenant Rhys Davids on the very day that he was due to go on leave. The Fokker F1 differed from the production DR.1 in detail only, Voss machine being fitted with a captured 110hp Le Rhone engine, his aircraft not being fitted with the outer wing skids common to the DR.1. |
Concorde over London by Ivan Berryman. A sight never to be repeated. Concorde G-BOAE gracefully drifts above London with Buckingham Palace immediately below, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, the River Thames and the London Eye in the middle distance. On 24th October 2003, the world said goodbye to this elegant airliner, bringing to a close almost thirty years of commercial supersonic travel. |
Tribute to Oliver 'Boots' LeBoutillier by Ivan Berryman. 'Boots' LeBoutillier was an American flying Ace credited with 10 victories in World War One. Having crossed into Canada and subsequently flying for the British, he is seen here in his Sopwith Triplane N5459 of 9 Naval Squadron in France in 1917 in which he scored 3 victories. In April 1918 he was involved in the dogfight in which Manfred von Richthofen - the infamous Red Baron - was shot down and killed. He was awarded the British Distinguished Flying Cross and after the war performed barnstorming and skywriting and gave flying lessons to Amelia Earhart. He appeared in many Hollywood movies as a stuntman, and for his rescue of a crashed pilot in Colorado he received the Silver Medal of Valor, the highest decoration of the Civil Air Patrol. LeBoutillier died in 1983 aged 88 after a life in aviation. |
A Quick Despatch by Ivan Berryman. Sqn Ldr James Leathart watches another of his victims, a Heinkel He.111, slowly roll over in its death throes above the beaches near Dunkirk on 21st May 1940, flying Spitfire Mk.1 P9389 (KL-A) of 54 Sqn, based at Hornchurch. All but one of his many claimed victories were scored in this aircraft which was eventually lost in October 1940 whilst being flown by Plt Off C Stewart, who baled out and survived the incident relatively unscathed. |
Captain Arthur Henry Cobby by Ivan Berryman. Arriving in France in 1917 with little or no air gunnery training behind him, Captain Arthur Harry Cobby went on to become the Australian Flying Corps highest scoring ace with 29 victories to his credit, five of them observation balloons. He is shown here in Sopwith Camel E1416 of 4 Sqn AFC (formerly 71 Sqn AFC) having downed one of his final victims, a Fokker D.VII on 4th September 1918. Cobby survived the Great War and served in the RAAF during the inter war period and World War Two, eventually leaving the service as Air Commodore CBE. He died in 1955. |
Angels of Malta - Faith, Hope and Charity by Ivan Berryman. Although key to the allied campaign in the Mediterranean, Malta was virtually undefended against air raids in the early part of the Second World War. Just four Gloster Sea Gladiators, packed in crates, were deposited on the island by HMS Glorious, these aircraft originally intended for operations in Norway. Three of them were hurriedly assembled, the fourth being held in reserve, and were instantly engaged in fierce fighting against Italian raiders. Nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity, their determined pilots fought for seventeen days without relief, their achievements playing a major part in fooling the Italian intelligence into thinking that this crucial Mediterranean outpost was much more heavily defended than it really was. |
