Snowbound - Tribute to No.439 Sqn RCAF by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On finals, Hawker Typhoon PD608 (5V-G) of 439 Sqn drifts over the threshold at a forward airstrip in Belgium after a mission during the winter of 1945. RB326 is waiting to take off, whilst others taxi in to their dispersal. |
The Maestro Strikes Again by Ivan Berryman. With Albatros 153.52 written off in a crash in February 1918, Hauptmann Godwin von Brumowski's final red mount was Albatros D.III (Oef) 153.209 with which he despatched an observation balloon and an Ansaldo SVA.5 on the same day on 19th June 1918, the latter belching flames before plunging into the bank of the Piave River. |
Trafalgar by Ivan Berryman. (PC) By 2.00pm on 21st October 1805, the Battle of Trafalgar was all but won, the combined French and Spanish fleets had suffered terrible losses, but not without great cost to the British. Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson lay dying in the cockpit of his flagship, Victory, having been struck down by a single musket round fired from the fighting top of the French Redoutable's mizzen mast as Nelson walked on deck with Captain Hardy. In this scene, the battered remains of Victory can be seen beneath the figurehead of the Spanish 74 Principe de Asturias which dominates the foreground. Beside her, the hulk of the Redoutable sags in the water as Temeraire breaks free. In the centre, the British 74 Leviathan is engaging the French 80-gun Neptune, whilst the San Augustin can be seen firing at the extreme right of the picture. |
Tribute to Freddie West VC by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On the 11th of August 1918, the Armstrong Whitworth FK8 C8602 of Ferdinand 'Freddie' West and his observer / gunner John Haslam was one of hundreds of aircraft tasked with locating German reserves on the ground to assist the Army. A gap in the clouds revealed a concentration of German troops - they dived low to assess their number but coming under intense fire returned to the clouds. Not satisfied that the enemy positions had been identified correctly, West dived again. Attacked by several aircraft and wounded, West pressed on with his low flight to gather further intelligence. Finding 'troops, guns and vehicles in all directions', they knew they had found the German reserves. Turning for home they encountered more German scouts. This time, the attack left their aircraft badly damaged and West was hit in the leg by five bullets, one of which severed an artery. With Haslam taking aim at the fighters while West tried to take evasive action, they managed to escape. Half fainting through blood loss, West fashioned a tourniquet from a leg of his shorts, and drifting into semi-consciousness, landed the aircraft behind Allied lines. He insisted that he should personally pass on the intelligence to his No.8 Sqn superiors, and lost consciousness after doing so. Sir John Salmond, in charge of the Air Force in France, put him forward for the Victoria Cross which was awarded for 'unparalleled pluck and endurance. The valour displayed by this officer has throughout been a magnificent example to his flight, which he has inspired with his devotion, courage and power of endurance.' Despite losing his leg, with an artificial limb he returned to flying duties after the war and remained in the Royal Air Force until the end of World War Two. He died in 1988. |
Tribute to Flight Sergeant Ladislaw Bobek by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On the night of 28th / 29th May 1942, Beaufighter X7583, piloted by Flt Sgt Ladislaw Bobek with Sgt Kovaric as navigator, intercepted a lone Dornier Do217 off the coast of Norfolk, sending it plunging into the North Sea after a 20 minute chase. This was the first of Bobek's victories for 68 Sqn which was made up almost entirely of Czech exiles, the squadron being based at High Ercall. Flt Sgt Ladislaw Bobek would go on to become an Ace with 5 confirmed victories. |
Veterans of the Med by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Alone in the aerial defence of Malta in the early part of WW2, these three Gloster Gladiators, nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity, saw such intense action against the invading Italian air force that the enemy's commanders were convinced that a much bigger force existed on Malta. They are depicted here making a low pass over the destroyer HMS Dainty as she heads out of Grand Harbour from Sliema Creek. Herself a veteran of much action in the early part of the war, HMS Dainty was lost to dive bombers off Tobruk on 24th February 1941. |
USS Kitty Hawk by Ivan Berryman. (PC) USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) refuels an Adams class Destroyer during a dusk operation off the Vietnam coast as a pair of E8 Crusaders are readied for launch on the forward catapults. Please note this postcard image is mirrored from the correct print image. |
Flt Lt Walter Lawson by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Depicting the No.19 Sqn Spitfire Mk.IIA of Flt Lt Walter Lawson attacking a Bf.109 E-4 of JG.3 in the Summer of 1940. The final tally of Lawson before he was listed as missing in August 1941 was 6 confirmed, 1 shared, 3 probables and 1 damaged. The Bf.109 shown here was flown by Oberleutnant Franz von Werra. He survived this encounter, but was shot down over Kent in September 1940. |
Scourge of the Deep - Leonardo da Vinci by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Under the command of Gianfranco Gazzana-Priaroggia, the Regia Marina submarine Leonardo da Vinci was to become the most successful non-German submarine of World War Two. On 21st April 1943, she encountered the liberty ship SS John Drayton which was returning, unladen, to Capetown from Bahrain and put two torpedoes into her before surfacing to finish her off with shells. The deadly reign of terror wrought by the combination of Gazzana-Priaroggia and his submarine came to an end just one month later when the Leonardo da Vinci was sunk by HMS Active and HMS Ness off Cape Finistere. |
Fork Tailed Devil (Lightning) by Ivan Berryman. (PC) It was during the inter-war period that a reawakening interest in twin engined fighter design prompted several countries to investigate a number of revolutionary concepts, of these only Lockheed's sleek and unconventional P.38 was to be put into large scale production, proving to be a versatile and dominant fighter possessed of extremely long range, good speed and manoeuverability and a formidable armament. When production ceased in 1945, 9,923 examples of the P38 Lightning had been delivered. |
The Channel Dash by Ivan Berryman. (PC) February 1942 and Viz. Admiral Ciliaxs mighty Scharnhorst leads her sister Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen up the English Channel during Operation Cerberus, their daring breakout from the port of Brest on the French Atlantic coast to the relative safety of Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbuttel. All three ships survived what became known as the Channel Dash, not without damage, but the operation proved a huge propaganda success for Germany and a crushing embarrassment for the British. A number of torpedo boats are in attendance, including Kondor and Falke and the Z class destroyer Friedrich Ihn in the distance. |
DZ 9.00am by Ivan Berryman. (PC) A trio of Bell Huey UH-1s deliver ARVN Rangers to a drop zone in the central Highlands of Vietnam during 1970. The ubiquitous Huey saw action in an enormous variety of roles, Vietnam being the first true helicopter war, and it will perhaps be remembered by many a grateful GI for its (and its crews) part in many hundreds of daring rescues amid the unyielding and unfamiliar terrain of south east Asia. |
Tribute to Friedrich Noltenius by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Studying medicine at the outbreak of World War One, Friedrich Noltenius was a decorated artillery soldier by the time he started flying missions in mid-1918. Flying with Jasta 27, he scored 13 victories before transferring to Jasta 6 in September 1918. A noted balloon buster, he is shown here in his personalised Fokker D.VII of Jasta 6 during October 1918. Scoring a total of 21 victories by the end of the war, his 20th entitled him to the award of the Blue Max to add to his Württemberg Knight's Cross, but the end of the war prevented him from receiving it. After the war he returned to medicine and became a doctor, but was killed in a flying accident in 1936. |
Menace - Heinkel 219A-7/R2 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) One of the most effective night fighters of WWII, Heinkel's extraordinary 219 'Uhu' (Owl) was designed from the outset as a highly specialized type, originally conceived as a multi-role aircraft, but eventually entering service purely in the nocturnal role. Equipped with the very latest in airborne radar and heavily armed, the 219s became the scourge of the skies against Allied night bombers until it met its match in the form of the night fighter Mosquito. This example is from Stab I/NJG 1, flown by Hauptmann Paul Forster during 1944. |
A Wing and a Prayer by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The Dams raids on the night of 16/17 May 1943 were notable not least for the incredible ingenuity shown by the Lancaster crews in their efforts to avoid detection by the enemy en route to their targets. P/O W C Townsend elected to fly his aircraft, ED886(G) O for Orange below tree-top height through a forest firetrap on his way to the Ennepe Dam, a feat carried out by moonlight alone. AJ-O made it successfully to its target where the Upkeep bomb was observed to hit the dam, but with no effect. Townsend returned to base at this perilous altitude, the crew observing that flak shells were bouncing off the sea in the German gunners' efforts to prevent the Lancaster's escape across the North Sea. AJ-O was one of eleven aircraft to return safely out of a total of nineteen that took part in the heroic raids under the codename Operation Chastise. |
Operation Mallard by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Halifax Tugs Towing Hamilcar Gliders. Halifax glider tugs of 644 Squadron based at Tarrant Rushton head out across the English Channel with their Hamilcar gliders as part of Operation Overlord in June 1944. The mighty Hamilcar was capable of carrying an 8-ton payload, which was the equivalent of two Tetrarch light tanks, and was used both in the Normandy invasion and at Arnhem. |
Zero Hour by Ivan Berryman. (PC) As dawn breaks across South Pacific skies, a group of Mitsubishi A6M5 Zeros of the 201st Air Group head outbound from their base at Rabaul on a raiding sortie in November 1944. |
Red Section Scramble by Ivan Berryman. (PC) 609 Sqn Hawker Typhoons are shown taking off from Manson in Kent in February 1943. Nearest aircraft, R7872 (PR-S) is that of Sgt John Johnny Wiseman, the other, DN294 (PR-O) being the mount of Fl Sgt Alan Babe Haddon. Both aircraft were tragically lost during an action on 14th February, the pair being taken by surprise by Focke-Wulf 190s over the Channel, Wiseman losing his life in the incident. |
Tribute to Sqn Ldr Eugeniusz Horbaczewski by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On 16 February 1944 Horbaczewski took command of the Polish No. 315 Squadron, flying the new P-51 Mustang Mk. III. On 12 June 1944 he shot down a FW 190, and on 30 July one Bf 109 individually and one with his wingman (counted as a 0.5 'share'). |
Home by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Templar knights in their distinctive red cross laden garb return home. The castles of the Knights Templar would take on the form of de-facto independent lordships with their own political authority in the lands they stood on. |
Tribute to Basil Stapleton by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Spitfire Ace Basil Gerald Stapme Stapleton achieved Ace status with 6 victories during the Battle of Britain in 1940. He is shown here in his Spitfire XT-L of No.603 Sqn during combat with German Ace Franz von Werra - the German ultimately survived being shot down over Kent in this encounter. Stapleton went on to fly Typhoons before himself being forced down behind enemy lines and captured in 1944, and liberated six months later. Basil Stapleton died in 2010. |
