Deadly Combo by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Equipped with the Henschel Hs.293 guided bomb, the Dornier Do.217s of KG 40 and KG 100 represented a new and significant threat to Allied shipping. The first such victims were the sloop HMS Egret and the destroyer HCMS Athabaskan, both in the Bay of Biscay in August 1943. Although crude and needing to be guided to their target by an operator in the launch aircraft, the Hs.293s introduced a new breed of air-launched weapon to modern warfare, a concept that is still in use to this day. |
Tribute to 488 Sqn RNZAF by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Immediately following the Allied invasion of northern France in June 1944, 488 Sqn RNZAF found themselves in the thick of the fighting, keeping enemy intruders at bay, flying mainly at night, a role to which their young pilots aspired and excelled. Among those was Flt Lt G E 'Jamie' Jameson who, together with his navigator Norman Crookes, shot down no fewer than eight enemy aircraft in Mosquito NF.XIII MM466, this particular machine becoming the most successful Mosquito of WWII in terms of aerial victories. Jameson was to be credited with a final total of eleven victories before being repatriated home. |
Captain Robert Little by Ivan Berryman. (PC) With a final 47 victories to his credit, Robert Alexander Little was one of the highest-scoring British aces of World War 1, beginning his career with the famous No 8 (Naval) Squadron in 1916, flying Sopwith Pup N5182, as shown here. On 21st April 1917, he was attacked and shot down by six aircraft of Jasta Boelke, Little being thrown from the cockpit of his Sopwith Camel on impact with the ground. As the German aircraft swooped in to rake the wreckage with machine gun fire, Little pulled his Webley from its holster and began returning fire before being assisted by British infantry with their Lewis guns. Such was the character of this great pilot who finally met his death whilst attacking Gotha bombers on the night of 27th May 1918. |
Trafalgar Aftermath by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Jury rigged and battered by the relentless gunnery of the French and Spanish fleets at Trafalgar, HMS Victory lies off the coast of Gibraltar as crews from HMS Neptune (nearest) are despatched to take over the tow from the Polyphemus for the final leg of their journey to relative safety, the flagship still bearing the body of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. |
USS United States, 1812 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Still showing some signs of her encounter with HMS Macedonian on 25th October 1812 and under the command of Captain Stephen Decatur, USS United States is shown surging through a heavy Atlantic swell en route for Newport, Rhode Island, which she would eventually reach on 4th December, in company with the Macedonian, who she had so decisively defeated and taken as a prize. |

The First Victory by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Pilot Joseph Frantz and his observer Louis Quénault have the unique distinction of recording the first ever aerial victory by an aircraft using weaponry. On 5th October 1914, Quénault used magazines of ammunition of the machine gun mounted on their Voisin III craft, with its incredibly primitive appearance, and continued with rifle fire once it had failed. Their prey, an Aviatik returned fire, but was observed to crash into trees following the combat - the first recorded aircraft to be shot down by another. |
HMS Resolution - Polar Explorer by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Originally a North Sea Collier named the Marquis of Granby, HMS Resolution was purchased by the Royal Navy and fitted out with all the very latest navigational aids and a water purification system in readiness for Captain Cook's second voyage to the Pacific in 1772. During this voyage, in 1773, Resolution became the first ship to cross the Antarctic Circle, entering the southern polar region on three occasions. Resolution was also Cook's choice for his third voyage in 1776 when she crossed the Arctic Circle twice in 1778 and 1779. Following her voyages of discovery, she returned to cargo duties, but her ultimate fate is unclear, as she was captured by the French in June 1782 and was never heard of again. |
U-99 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Famed for his night time surface attacks on convoys, Otto Kretschmer, commanding U-99 is shown having claimed another victim beneath a full moon during the Summer of 1940. |
The Power of the Sword by Ivan Berryman. (PC) A knight's one-handed sword was a study in balance-blade long enough for reach, yet light enough for quick recovery behind a shield. Its double edge tapered to a precise point, suited for both cutting through mail and thrusting into the joints of plate. The crossguard flared straight and simple, protecting the hand without burdening it, and the pommel served to counterbalance the blade's weight. |
HMS Resolution at Gibraltar by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Launched in January 1915, the Revenge-class battleship HMS Resolution was to enjoy a 33 year career during which she served in the Atlantic, home and Eastern Fleets as well as serving repeated spells in the Mediterranean, being both bombed and torpedoed along the way. She is depicted off Gibraltar with HMS Wolverine, the destroyer perhaps best remembered for destroying the U-47 which sunk Resolutions sister ship Royal Oak in Scapa Flow. |
The Bee Goes to War by Ivan Berryman. (PC) In May, 1940, Operation Dynamo was initiated to rescue British and French forces from the beaches of Dunkirk. As well as the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, over 800 small ships crossed the English Channel to help with the evacuation. Among them was the MV Bee, registered at Cowes and, at 7.30pm, she and her four crew set off from Ramsgate for the French coast. Bravely crewed by Bill Trowbridge, Harry Downer; Mark Hocking and Fred Reynard, the Bee rescued over 400 men under constant attack from the German Luftwaffe, but was eventually ordered to return home having suffered propeller damage caused by submerged debris at Dunkirk. |
The Taking of the Lady Grace by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Although entirely fictitious, this scene depicts a typical action by pirates in the early 1700s, most likely in the Caribbean where the many supply routes from Europe converged and offered rich pickings. Although fraught with danger, the rewards for the buccaneers were rich and plenty, many of them rising to great notoriety for their daring exploits. |
Hikin' for Home by Ivan Berryman. (PC) B-17G 2107027 is depicted limping home to Bassingbourn with the starboard outer propeller feathered following a raid during the Summer of 1944. 'Hikin' for Home' served with the 322nd Bomb Sqn, 91st Bomb Group as part of the 8th Air Force. Escorting her home is Major George Preddy, the highest scoring P-51 pilot and sixth in the list of all-time top American Aces, seen here flying 413321 'Cripes a Mighty 3rd'. |
Tribute to Wing Commander Adrian Warburton by Ivan Berryman. (PC) One of the most unorthodox and daring pilots of World War II, 'Warby' Warburton was the only bomber pilot to become an ace, shooting down a Savoia Marchetti SM.79, a Macchi MC.200 and three Cant Z.506Bs, one of which is depicted here being attacked by Warburton's Martin Maryland AR705. |
A Norwegian Tribute by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Norwegian pilots, forming 331 and 332 Squadrons, were to prove themselves a brave and formidable force following their formation in 1942. Here, two Spitfire Mk IXCs of 332 Sqn break to starboard, the nearest aircraft being that of Kapt. Finn Thorsager. |

Tribute to Major Erich Rudorffer by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG 54 Erich Rudorffer is depicted in Fw190A-6 'Black Double Chevron' over the misty forests of Finland in June 1944. Credited with 222 aerial victories, he survived being shot down no less than sixteen times and survived the war until eventually passing away in 2016 aged 98. |

Tribute to Robert S Johnson by Ivan Berryman. (PC) American fighter Ace Robert S Johnson is depicted in his 56th Fighter Group P-47 Thunderbolt with codes HV-P named 'Lucky'. Of his 27 victories during a tour of 89 combat missions from April 1943 to May 1944, he scored 21 in this aircraft. The joint sixth top-scoring American Ace of WW2, he was notably the first US pilot in the European theater to better the historic WW1 victory total of Eddie Rickenbacker, the top-scoring American Ace of that war. Post-war, he became a test-pilot and retired in 1962. He died in 1998. |
