Sous-Lieutenant Willy Coppens - Roasting A Sausage by Ivan Berryman. (PC) During an amazing spree of balloon-busting during 1918, Willy Coppens gained notoriety over the Western Front for his sheer daring and marksmanship, sending no fewer than 35 observation balloons plummeting to the ground, as well as two aircraft. Here, Coppens despatches a Drachen balloon flying his modified Hanriot HD.1 No23 which he had painted blue because he so disliked the ugly, bad camouflage in which it was delivered. Despite losing a leg whilst downing his final two balloons, Coppens survived the war and lived a full life until his death in December 1986. |

HMS Euryalus Arriving at Spithead by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The 36-gun frigate HMS Euryalus is shown arriving to join Nelsons flagship HMS Victory off St Helens, Isle of Wight, at around 8.00am on the morning of 12th September 1805. These two ships would depart together just three days later to join His Majestys ships Ajax and Thunderer off Plymouth before heading south to Spanish waters and the Battle of Trafalgar. |
Canberra at San Carlos by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Looking slightly the worse for wear after her journey south to the Falkland Islands in 1982, the P&O cruise liner Canberra, requisitioned as a troop carrier at the outbreak of the conflict, is shown in the midst of an attack by Argentine Mirage aircraft in San Carlos Water during May. Believed by the Argentine pilots to be a hospital ship, Canberra herself was never targeted, but her proximity to other ships of the British task force meant that she was constantly in danger. |

Tribute to General Witold Urbanowicz by Ivan Berryman (PC) General Witold Urbanowicz was the second highest Polish Fighter ace with 17 confirmed kills and 13 Victories scored during the Battle of Britain flying with No. 303 Polish Kosciuszko Squadron. Nine of them while flying Hawker Hurricane Mk.I RF-E/P3901 as shown in this painting. He was the only Polish Air Force pilot to be credited with 2 kills of Japanese Army Air Force Ki-43 aircraft. |
In Destinys Hands, Trafalgar, 12:15 PM by Ivan Berryman (PC) It is approximately 12,15 pm on 21st October 1805. With the combined Franco-Spanish enemy line in the far distance, HMS Victory is just beginning to manouevre, having chosen the French flagship Bucentaure as her target. Behind Victory lies Temeraire, then Neptune, followed by the two-deckers, Leviathan and Conqueror and Agamemnon in the foreground. Victory is flying the signal Engage the Enemy Closely from her main mast. Most ships have their studding sails set on the larboard (port) side only trying to harness as much wind as possible to hasten their approach 1n such light airs. At this stage, the stoves will have been extinguished, the guns run out and all decks cleared for action, their floors strewn with sawdust to avoid slipping and to soak up the blood. The Marines will be in position the officers at their posts and gun crews may likely have been singing hearty songs to raise their spirits. Fate alone knew what awaited them, once the firing started. |
Prelude to Taranto by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Prior to the British attack on the Italian battle fleet moored in Taranto Harbour in November 1940, the job of obtaining the very latest photo reconnaissance fell to the maverick pilot Adrian 'Warby' Warburton. Flying a requisitioned Martin Maryland, Warburton undertook a series of breathtakingly low level passes across the ships moored in the harbour, cheating a hail of anti aircraft fire and flak to bring home the vital information to Rear Admiral Lumley Lyster, the flag officer aboard HMS Illustrious. Ships shown moored in the Mar Grande here are Vittorio Veneto (nearest) and Littorio with Duilio and Giulio Cesare in the background. |
Take it to the Bridge by Ivan Berryman. (PC) As cuts to the RAF and other armed services by the Labour Government were implemented in the late 1960s, Flt Lt Alan R Pollock of No.1 Sqn took it upon himself to stage a very personal protest whilst en route to West Raynham from Tangmere on 5th April 1968. Peeling away from the rest of his flight immediately after take off, Pollock flew low-level to London where he buzzed the Houses of Parliament three times before flying his Hawker Hunter FGA.9 under the upper spans of Tower Bridge. The incident is now part of British aviation folklore, but Pollock was immediately removed from flying duties for his audacity. He will always be recorded in history, however, as the first pilot to fly a jet aircraft through Tower Bridge. |
Last But One by Ivan Berryman. (PC) In the skies just west of Amiens on 20th April 1918, the celebrated German ace, Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron, flying his famous all-red Fokker DR.1 Triplane 425/17 and accompanied by other DR.1s of his notorious Flying Circus, encountered Sopwith Camels of No.3 and No.201 Squadrons and a fierce aerial battle ensued. Two Sopwith Camels were to fall to the Red Baron's guns that day, the first of them being Major Richard Raymond-Barker, shown here flicking his aircraft to the right to avoid the German's fire. Raymond-Barker was almost immediately shot down, his burning aircraft being consumed by fire on impact. Just minutes later, Second Lieutenant David Lewis was caught and despatched, these two British scouts being the last ever victims of Baron von Richthofen. |
Exercise Tiger by Ivan Berryman. (PC) As part of a rehearsal for the impending D-Day landings on 6th June 1944, eight tank landing ships (LSTs), together with two destroyers, embarked most of their American troops on a British beach and began making their way to Slapton Sands. This was the night of 27th / 28th April and, unseen in the darkness of the night, a hunting party of German Schnellboots (S-Boats) were soon upon them. The painting depicts the awful demise of LST 507 who fell victim to the torpedoes of S-150 and S-130, the huge ship's cargo of trucks, jeeps and gasoline quickly bursting into an uncontrollable fire before she slipped beneath the waves. LST 531 was also sunk while LST 289 managed to struggle back to port. 197 American seamen and 441 GIs lost their lives on that fateful night, while all the Schnellboots returned safely, undamaged. S150, commanded by Oblt. z.S. Behr is nearest with S130, commanded by Oblt. z.S. Rabe is speeding past in the middle distance. |
Bismarck by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Fairey Swordfish I, L9726 4M of 818 Sqn, HMS Ark Royal pulls a tight, climbing turn through a hail of anti-aircraft fire as its torpedo strikes home, jamming the steering gear of the mighty Bismarck and setting in motion the beginning of her dramatic end. |
HMS Malaya at Capetown, South Africa. by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The Queen Elizabeth class battleship HMS Malaya is pictured at Capetown in April 1942 en route to Durban from Gibraltar. A veteran of the First World War, Malaya took part in the Battle of Jutland, receiving eight hits, and going on to serve throughout World War Two, surviving a torpedo off Cape Verde in 1941. She is seen here about to recover her Fairey Swordfish floatplane beneath the dramatic outline of Table Mountain. |
Oberleutnant Oskar Freiherr von Boenigk by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Opening his victory tally by shooting down a Sopwith Camel in July 1917, von Boenigk proved himself to be a fine airman and a keen marksman by claiming a further five enemy aircraft by the end of that year. He continued to score steadily until the wars end, being credited with an eventual 26 kills. He went on to serve in the Luftwaffe during World War II, attaining the rank of Major-General, but was taken prisoner by the Russians in 1945 and died in captivity the following year. He is shown here in Pfalz D.III 1936/17 whilst serving with Jasta 4, whose aircraft were immediately recognisable by the black spiral ribbon applied to their fuselages. Von Boenigk is believed to have scored seven of his victories in this machine. |
R.34 - Welcome to America by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Mineola, Long Island, USA, 6th July 1919. Major J E M Pritchard parachutes from the forward car of the R.34 to supervise ground handling of the giant airship upon its arrival in the United States. In so doing, Pritchard became the first man to land on American soil after an east-west crossing of the Atlantic by air. The enormous airship, with the nickname 'Tiny', was damaged beyond repair by foul weather in January 1921 and scrapped. |

Tribute to Ludwig 'Lutz' Beckmann by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Lutz Beckmann joined Jasta 6 in December 1917, transferring to Jasta 48 then Jasta 56 in March 1918 before scoring his first victory. By the end of the war he had scored 8 victories - he is shown here in his colourful Fokker D.VII in September 1918. In World War Two he was awarded the Knight's Cross while commanding a unit flying the Junkers Ju52. He died in 1965. |
Lanoe G Hawker by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Major Lanoe G Hawkers Bristol Scout C 1611, the No 6 Sqn aircraft in which he shot down two enemy planes on 25th July, 1915, and sufficiently damaged a third enemy aircraft to force it to the ground. He is shown here in combat with an Albatross C.III - soon to fall as one of his victims that day. Lanoe G Hawker earned the first aerial Victoria Cross (VC) of the war for this action, but was killed in November 1916, after a lengthy battle with the infamous Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen, becoming his 11th victim. |
Black Lizzie by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Entering service with the RAF in June 1938, the Westland Lysander was to prove invaluable in its role of transporting SOE agents on clandestine missions during World War II. 1,652 Lysanders were built and they were the first British aircraft to be based in France at the outbreak of the war and the last to see action there during the evacuation of Dunkirk. The example shown is of 161 Sqn based at Tempsford. |
