Guardian Moon by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Bomb doors open and ready for the vital drop, Short Stirling III EH990 prepares to lay her deadly cargo of mines off the coast of the Frisian Islands on the night of 7th October 1943. LS-K failed to return from the perilous mission, the aircraft believed to have been the victim of a German night fighter. |
HMS Medway by Ivan Berryman (PC) HMS Medway was the first Royal navy submarine Depot ship that was designed for the purpose from the outset. She is shown here with a quintet of T-class submarines on her starboard side, whilst an elderly L-Class begins to move away having completed replenishment. HMS Medway was sunk on 30th June1940 having been torpedoed by U-372 off Alexandria. Additional colour added to enhance this previously black and white image. |

No Way Back by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Despite crippling damage to their Lancaster ED925 (G), the crew of AJ-M continued to press home their attack on the Mohne Dam on the night of 16th/17th May 1943. With both port engines ablaze, Flt Lt J V Hopgood forced his blazing aircraft on, releasing the Upkeep bomb just precious seconds too late to strike the dam, the mine instead bouncing over the wall and onto the power station below with devastating results. ED925 attempted to recover from the maelstrom, but the fuel fire was too intense and the aircraft was tragically lost, just two of her crew managing to escape the impact to spend the rest of the war as PoWs. |

Tribute to Franz Schieß by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Scoring his first victories on the Eastern Front with JG53, Franz Schieß was posted with his squadron to the Mediterranean from December 1941. He shot down aircraft consistently through 1942, operating from Sicily then Tunisia. He achieved his 50th victory in May 1943, claiming one of his eventual unsurpassed tally of 17 P-38 Lightnings. Awarded the Knight's Cross in June 1943, he was sent on leave for two months but returned in August, claiming 12 victories in 11 days. On 2nd September 1943, he was killed when his Me109 crashed into the sea during combat with P-38 Lightnings. He was credited with 67 victories in more than 650 missions. |
The Sinking of U533 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) U533 began its first patrol in April 1943, coming under repeated attack from Allied aircraft in 40 days at sea. The U-boat set off from Lorient in France for a second patrol, rounding the Cape of Good Hope and into the Indian Ocean. In the Gulf of Oman on 16th October, the submarine was spotted and attacked by a British Bisley bomber of No.244 Sqn, piloted by Lewis William Chapman. The Bisley was the name originally given to the Mk.V Blenheim aircraft. Already entering a desperate dive to escape, the depth charges immediately caused the submarine to sink nose first, leaving little chance of escape. Of the 53 crew, an officer in the conning tower managed to open the hatch as the submarine passed 50 metres depth, the pressure propelling Günther Schmidt and the unnamed officer to the surface. Schmidt kept the unconscious officer afloat but he died an hour later, while Schmidt kept himself afloat without aid for more than 24 hours before being picked up and taken prisoner - the only survivor of the sinking. |

HMS Ocean by Ivan Berryman (PC) HMS Ocean is the sixth ship to bear this famous name and is ably equipped with 12 Sea King HC Mk4s, 4 Landing Craft, 2 Griffon Hovercraft, plus enough equipment necessary to provide support for a Commando battlaion of over 800 Royal Marines. She is depicted here in company with HMS Chatham, flying off Royal Marines from 42 Commando during operations off Sierra Leone. |
Tugging the Tiger's Tail by Ivan Berryman. (PC) It is the Battle of Trafalgar, 21st October 1805 and the British 2nd rater Temeraire with 98 guns, having followed HMS Victory through the Franco-Spanish line, finds herself alongside the Spanish flagship, La Santisima Trinidad. This giant was by some measure the largest warship in the World, boasting four full gun decks and 130 guns. Undaunted, Captain Eliab Harvey took on the Santisima Trinidad, delivering a number of blows into the enemy’s massive red and black hull. However, Temeraire was largely out of control by this time, having taken much punishment as she had approached the enemy fleet. Her main topgallant mast had been shot away, as well as the mizzen topgallant. Her fore yard had crashed down onto her deck and her fore topsail had caught fire and been extinguished. Taking fire from both sides, the Temeraire lumbered on, eventually colliding with Le Redoutable, which was engaged with Victory. Between them, the two British three-deckers poured fire into the French ship until it struck its colours |
Lieutenant-Colonel Raymond Collishaw by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Raymond Collishaw is shown heading B-Flight of No.10 Naval Squadron in 1917, comprised of five Sopwith Triplanes that became known as the Black Flight - all flown with great success by Canadian pilots. Collishaws aircraft was named Black Maria, Reids was Black Roger and Sharmans was Black Death, while Nash and Alexander flew Black Sheep and Black Prince respectively. Collishaws personal tally at the end of the war was 60 victories. |
HMS Ark Royal and HMS Sheffield off the Mole - Gibraltar by Ivan Berryman (PC) Having played a vital part in the battle for the Mediterranean for over two years, HMS Ark Royal finally succumbed to a U-Boats torpedo in November 1941. She is shown here with a pair of Swordfish Mk1s of 821 Sqn ranged on the deck, passing the cruiser HMS Sheffield off the Mole, Gibraltar, earlier that same year. |
Victory at Monte Santo by Ivan Berryman (PC) An Italian Caudron C.IV was a victory shared by Hauptmann Godwin von Brumowski and his great friend Frank Linke-Crawford above the Isonzo River, close to the ruined monastery of Monte Santo, both Austro-Hungarian pilots flying the recalcitrant Hansa-Brandenburg D.1 (KD). |
ORP Blyskawica at Cowes by Ivan Berryman. (PC) With the iconic hammerhead crane dominating the Cowes skyline ORP Blyskawica slips away from the J S Whites Shipyard where she was built and launched on 1st October 1936. With her sister ship, ORP Grom, both ships were attached to the Royal Navy as part of the Free Polish Forces. While Grom was attacked and sunk in Rombaksfjord in May 1940, Blyskawica returned to Cowes for a refit in the spring of 1942 when, on the night of 4th May she used her own weapons to vigorously defend Cowes during a particularly intense bombardment of the town by the German Luftwaffe, endearing the ship and her brave crew to the townsfolk of both East and West Cowes. ORP Blyskawica survives to this day as a floating museum at the port of Gdynia in Poland. |
Tribute to Lt André De Meulemeester by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Seen here in his Nieuport 23 aircraft, Lt André De Meulemeester was a Belgian Ace with 11 confirmed victories. Joining the Belgian Air Service in 1915, he was assigned to a squadron in 1916 and acquired the nickname Sergeant Mystère. He claimed his first of 19 unconfirmed victories in February 1917 and his first confirmed victory at the end of that April. After flying over 500 missions during the war, he joined the family brewery business and lived to the age of 78. |

Spitfire F Mk21 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Pushing the concept of the Spitfire almost to the limit, the sleek F Mk212 represented the ultimate in fighter design at the end of the Second World War. Powered by the mighty Griffon 61 engine driving a five blade propeller, its armament consisted of four 20mm British Hispano Cannon, two in each wing. This example is LA200 (DL-E) of 91 Sqn in 1945. |
HMS Coventry by Ivan Berryman (PC) HMS Coventry comes under air attack from aircraft off Tobruk, 14th September 1942. As well as losing the anti-aircraft cruiser HMS Coventry, the Allies also lost HMS Zulu and six coastal craft sunk by bombing as they were returning from Tobruk. HMS Coventry was rated as one of the most effective anti-aircraft ships in the entire British navy, downing more aircraft than any other ship. Raid on Wajir by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The second half of 1940 saw repeated attacks by the Regia Aeronautica on Allied airstrips in East Africa, but its aging bomber force proved no match for the Hurricanes and Gladiators that offered a spirited defence. The airstrip at Wajir in Kenya was attacked several times by the Italians, but largely survived, the worst damage being the destruction of a fuel dump on 13th June.
