Deadly Combo by Ivan Berryman. Equipped with the Henschel Hs.293 guided bomb, the Dornier Do.217s of KG 40 and KG 100 represented a new and significant threat to Allied shipping. The first such victims were the sloop HMS Egret and the destroyer HCMS Athabaskan, both in the Bay of Biscay in August 1943. Although crude and needing to be guided to their target by an operator in the launch aircraft, the Hs.293s introduced a new breed of air-launched weapon to modern warfare, a concept that is still in use to this day. |
The Best Fighting Unit in the LFT by Ivan Berryman (PC) During 1917 under the leadership of Hauptmann Godwin von Brumowski Flik 41J was to become recognized as the finest of all the Fliegerkompanie in the Austro-Hungarian Army Air Service. With the superb Albatros D.III (Oef), the Luftfahrtruppen (LFT) were equipped to take on the enemy on equal terms. |
Albert Ball by Ivan Berryman. Albert Ball in his Nieuport 17 having just shot down a German LVG. His aircraft, A134, was distinctive in having a bright red spinner. He was the first Royal Flying Corps pilot to score a hat-trick (3 kills on a single mission) and, in the course of his career, scored another two on his way to his outstanding 44 victories. |
Victory over Africa by Ivan Berryman. The 73 Sqn Hurricane of Sqn Ldr Derek Ward is shown having received fatal strikes from the guns of Bf 109 F-4 flown by the 'Star of Africa' Hauptmann Hans-Joachim Marseilles of 3/JG27 on 17th June 1942. Ward was Marseilles' third victim in this single action when he returned to the combat zone to cover the safe descent by parachute of the German ace's first two victories, both of whom had been shot down within seconds of each other. |

Ready for Combat by Ivan Berryman. Erich Rudorffer commanding I./JG7 flying the Me262. Erich Rudorffer was the master of multiple scoring - achieving more multiple victories than any other pilot. |
Yellow 10 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The elegant D-13 was the ultimate example of Focke-Wulf's FW.190 to be powered by the Jumo 213EB inverted inline engine and is still widely regarded as one of the finest aircraft to have entered service with the Luftwaffe in WWII. Armed with three 20mm guns, one of them firing through the propeller spinner, this aircraft proved itself to be an effective weapon for Geschwader Kommodore Major Franz Gotz of JG.26, the great ace claiming 63 victories. His machine is depicted in close-up here - "Yellow 10", Werk No. 836017, based at Furstenau in February 1945. |
Tribute to the Blenheim Crews by Ivan Berryman. Blenheim IVs of No 21 Squadron, here being attacked by Adolf Gallands Bf 109 on 21st June 1940. Galland claimed two Blenheims and a Spitfire that day before he, too, was shot down by the defending Spitfires of 303 Sqn. |
Incident over Mannheim by Ivan Berryman. On the night of 12th September 1944, Lancaster NF958 (LS-M) of No.15 Sqn was lost in the skies above Mannheim when it was attacked by the Messerschmitt Bf.110G-2 of Ofw Ludwig Schmidt of II/NGJ 6, the bomber receiving hits to the bomb bay which ignited the incendiaries still in their racks. Five of the crew bailed out and were taken prisoner of war once captured. The pilot, F/O Norman Overend RNZAF, did not escape the aircraft. Flt Sgt Harry A Beverton was seen to leave the stricken Lancaster but was not seen again. Capitaine Georges Guynemer by Ivan Berryman. One of Frances most venerated pilots in World War 1 was Capitaine Georges Guynemer whose final victory tally has never been fully established, although he has been officially credited with 53 kills. It is more likely, however, that his actual total was nearer to 88! He is shown here in his Spad S.VII having just claimed his 31st victim, a Gotha bomber. |
Tribute to Friedrich Noltenius by Ivan Berryman. Studying medicine at the outbreak of World War One, Friedrich Noltenius was a decorated artillery soldier by the time he started flying missions in mid-1918. Flying with Jasta 27, he scored 13 victories before transferring to Jasta 6 in September 1918. A noted balloon buster, he is shown here in his personalised Fokker D.VII of Jasta 6 during October 1918. Scoring a total of 21 victories by the end of the war, his 20th entitled him to the award of the Blue Max to add to his Württemberg Knight's Cross, but the end of the war prevented him from receiving it. After the war he returned to medicine and became a doctor, but was killed in a flying accident in 1936. |
Tribute to Hugo Broch by Ivan Berryman. Regarded as one of the finest wingmen to have flown, Hugo Broch first flew alongside Horst Adameit (who scored 166 victories) then Bazi Sterr (130 victories) before emerging as one of the superb combat pilots of JG54. Shown here in his Fw190, he scored 81 victories in 324 missions and was awarded the Knight's Cross. |

Looking for Business by Ivan Berryman. A pair of Focke Wulf 190A4s of 9./JG2 Richthofen based at Vannes, France during February 1943. The nearest aircraft is that of Staffelkapitan Siegfried Schnell. The badge on the nose is the rooster emblem of III./JG2 and the decoration on Schnells rudder shows 70 of his eventual total of 93 kills. |
Von Richthofens Flying Circus by Ivan Berryman. No World War 1 pilot is better known than Manfred Von Richthofen, the Red Baron, and few pilots were greater exponents of the little Fokker DR.1 Triplane in which he scored nineteen of his eighty victories. In fact, only one of the DR.1s flown by von Richthofen was painted all-over Red. In April 1918, 127/17 was his mount, this machine being depicted here shortly after take off in company with other Jasta 11 pilots of his notorious Flying Circus. Among this formation are: Ltn Eberhardt Mohnicke, Ltn Hans Joachim Wolff, Rittm Manfred von Richthofen and his brother Ltn Lothar von Richthofen. The Flying Circus soubriquet was appended by the British and Canadian forces and was never used by von Richthofen or Jasta 11 themselves, but the sight of the red-nosed Triplanes as they joined battle in the skies above France signaled to Allied pilots a tough battle ahead. |
Seeing Red by Ivan Berryman. Credited with no fewer than 80 victories, Manfred Von Richthofen, The Red Baron, became legendary, not least for the 17 kills scored whilst flying the diminutive Fokker DR1 Triplane. Contrary to popular belief, however, only one of his aircraft is known to have been painted all red. Serial no. 477/17 is shown here dicing with an SE5. |

(P) This unique piece is a pencil drawing of the Red Baron - Manfred von Richthofen - claiming one of his 80 victories, carefully added by the artist to an existing sheet of paper signed by the Red Baron himself. This rare signed sheet was acquired from a respected German military autograph company. |
