Supermarine S6.B Engine Change by Ivan Berryman.

The Supermarine S6.B was the aircraft famed for winning the Schneider Trophy outright in 1931. Here, the Rolls Royce R engine is being lowered into the body of the aircraft. The engine cover on the aircraft was so large that when it was removed, there was very little left except a void where the engine would be.

Knockout Blow by Ivan Berryman.

Banff Mosquito H of 404 Squadron flown on its first operational mission by Flying Officer A Catrano and Flight Lieutenant A E Foord spots a German Blohm and Voss Bv138 anchored off Kjevik. They attacked the Bv138 which blew up before going on to attack a Heinkel He115 floatplane which was in the vicinity. This drawing shows the Mosquito making its attack on the Heinkel as the Bv138 explodes in the distance.

Typhoon Season by Ivan Berryman.

Typhoon IBs of No.181 Squadron attack a German supply vessel off the coast of northern France during the run up to D-Day in 1944 using cannon and 60lb rockets. This unique aircraft's amazing speed at low level and awesome fire-power proved formidable and, after a shaky start to its service career, proved itself beyond all doubt to be an essential tool in the softening-up operations against German defences prior to allied invasion in June 1944.

Arrowhead by Ivan Berryman.

British Aerospace Hawk of the Red Arrows over Farnborough.

Tribute to Freddie West VC by Ivan Berryman.

On the 11th of August 1918, the Armstrong Whitworth FK8 C8602 of Ferdinand 'Freddie' West and his observer / gunner John Haslam was one of hundreds of aircraft tasked with locating German reserves on the ground to assist the Army. A gap in the clouds revealed a concentration of German troops - they dived low to assess their number but coming under intense fire returned to the clouds. Not satisfied that the enemy positions had been identified correctly, West dived again. Attacked by several aircraft and wounded, West pressed on with his low flight to gather further intelligence. Finding 'troops, guns and vehicles in all directions', they knew they had found the German reserves. Turning for home they encountered more German scouts. This time, the attack left their aircraft badly damaged and West was hit in the leg by five bullets, one of which severed an artery. With Haslam taking aim at the fighters while West tried to take evasive action, they managed to escape. Half fainting through blood loss, West fashioned a tourniquet from a leg of his shorts, and drifting into semi-consciousness, landed the aircraft behind Allied lines. He insisted that he should personally pass on the intelligence to his No.8 Sqn superiors, and lost consciousness after doing so. Sir John Salmond, in charge of the Air Force in France, put him forward for the Victoria Cross which was awarded for 'unparalleled pluck and endurance. The valour displayed by this officer has throughout been a magnificent example to his flight, which he has inspired with his devotion, courage and power of endurance.' Despite losing his leg, with an artificial limb he returned to flying duties after the war and remained in the Royal Air Force until the end of World War Two. He died in 1988.

Final Touchdown by Ivan Berryman.

The end of an era. British Airways Concorde G-BOAG moments before touching down at Heathrow for the very last time.

Tribute to the Blenheim Crews by Ivan Berryman.

Blenheim IVs of No 21 Squadron, here being attacked by Adolf Gallands Bf 109 on 21st June 1940. Galland claimed two Blenheims and a Spitfire that day before he, too, was shot down by the defending Spitfires of 303 Sqn.

Leutnant Josef Mai by Ivan Berryman.

Victory No 26 for Josef Mai was a 64 Squadron SE5.A on 5th September 1918, here falling victim to the guns of the aces zebra-striped Fokker D.VII 4598/18 of Jasta 5. By the end of the war, his total had risen to 30 aircraft destroyed, Mai himself collecting a number of decorations, among them the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class. Surviving the Great War, it is believed that he became a flying instructor for the Luftwaffe during World War II, finally being laid to rest in 1982, aged ninety four.

Tribute to Leonard H Rochford by Ivan Berryman.

Recording 18 individual victories plus another 11 shared with other pilots, Leonard 'Tich' Rochford scored most of his victories in the Sopwith Camel. However, under the stewardship of the more experienced Raymond Collishaw - who became the second highest scoring Candian Ace of the war - he flew his early missions with No.3 Naval Air Squadron in the Sopwith Pup. He had forced two Albatros down out of control in March and May 1917 before the victory depicted here on 7th July 1917. In Sopwith Pup N6162 he shared in the destruction of an enemy seaplane with 4 other pilots north of Ostend. He is one of the top 30 Commonwealth Aces of the war, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Distinguished Service Cross with Bar. He died in 1986 aged 90.

Tribute to Wing Commander Werner Christie by Ivan Berryman.

Norwegian ace Wing Commander Werner Christie is shown in his personalised P.51K, KH790, the aircraft that he flew whilst in command of the Hunsdon Wing in the spring of 1945. Christie's final victory toll was 11 confirmed kills before being shot down and captured in April.

Tribute to William Pitt-Brown by Ivan Berryman.

William Pitt-Brown was a ground-attack Typhoon pilot during the Normandy campaign. Prior to this he served on the North-West Frontier flying Wapati and Valencia aircraft with No.31 Sqn, before flying Curtiss Mohawks with No.5 Sqn on the Arakan and Imphal fronts in the Burma campaign. During the Normandy campaign, he commanded No.174 Sqn the led 121 Wing, completing more than 100 missions. Shown here in Curtiss Mohawk IV of No.5 Sqn, Arakan, William Pitt-Brown went on to high command of the Royal Air Force.

617 Squadron Outbound to the Ruhr by Ivan Berryman.

Viewed from the cockpit, Lancasters of 617 Sqn Dambusters form up at the beginning of their perilous journey to the Ruhr Valley on the night of 16th May 1943 when the Möhne and Eder dams were breached under the codename Operation Chastise.

Avenger's Return by Ivan Berryman.

On 24th January 1945, whilst taking part in Operation Meridian, S/Lt Arthur Page's Grumman Avenger JZ469 of 849 NAS suffered an electrical fire whilst climbing toward the target in formation and the decision was made to abort the mission and make an emergency landing back on HMS Victorious. Page's aircraft is shown here moments before touchdown under the watchful eye of the Landing Signals Officer.

The Final Flight by Ivan Berryman.

On 31st May 1954, Saunders-Roe's beautiful SR.45 Princess flying boat made her final flight, taking off from the Cowes Roads for a short test flight for radio checks and to investigate how the ten-engine giant responded to engine cuts. By all accounts, the tests passed without incident and this graceful machine returned to her slipway at the East Cowes works, never to take to the air again. Orders for this extraordinary aircraft failed to materialise and G-ALUN and her two sister airframes were eventually scrapped at Calshot.

The Dash for Home by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Drop tanks gone and light on fuel, two Hawker Tempest Vs of 3 Sqn based at RAF Coltishall and its satellite base of RAF Matlask, race at low level across the mist-filled fields of southern England on their way home. Nearest aircraft is JN817 (JF-H) with JN765 (JF-K) slightly ahead.

The Attack on Villers Bocage by Ivan Berryman.

Lancasters of No.15 Squadron are shown releasing their bombs during the attack against German armour that had amassed in and near the French village of Villers Bocage on 30th June 1944. ED395 (LS-M), piloted by Fl Off W Hall, is in the background with LM473 (LS-P) in the foreground, flown by Fl Sgt N Overend. The village was almost completely obliterated during the bombing raid and the operation was deemed a tactical success.

First Across the Pond by Ivan Berryman.

In one of the most fraught and epic pioneering flights ever made, John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown became the first men to fly across the Atlantic from St John's, Newfoundland to County Galway in Northern Ireland in June 1919 in a slightly modified Vickers Vimy. The Secretary of State for Air, Winston Churchill presented the two British pilots with the Daily Mail Prize in honour of their achievement that had been completed in less than 72 hours of continuous flying, mostly in the most dreadful weather conditions, battling with reliability problems in the aircraft and the extreme cold that threatened to bring them down in the middle of the ocean. King George V awarded them the KBE one week later and their place in history was secured.

Captain Andrew Beauchamp-Proctor by Ivan Berryman.

Standing just five feet two inches tall, Andrew Beauchamp-Proctor had to have his SE5a specially modified to accommodate his small stature, but the diminutive South African was a giant in the air, claiming a total of 54 victories before the end of the war, many of them observation balloons which made him one of the top balloon-busting aces of the RFC. But many aircraft fell to his guns, too, as here when on 21st August 1918 he claimed an Albatros C-Type as victory number 34 whilst flying D6856 of 84 Squadron.

Bulldogs and Battleships by Ivan Berryman. (GS)

A pair of Bristol Bulldog aircraft pass over the British Fleet in the 1930s.

Raging Tempest by Ivan Berryman.

Developed from the hawker Typhoon, the first hawker Tempest MkV took to the air during September 1942 and immediately showed great promise as a most versatile aircraft. During the build up to Overlord in 1944, Tempests raged across northern France softening up the enemy defences and blocking or destroying arterial supply routes. This Hawker Tempest V is engaged in knocking out a German train as part of Roland Beamont's No.3 Squadron operations prior to D - Day.

An Early Bath by Ivan Berryman.

In the early evening of the 18th of July 1941, following coastguard reports of an enemy aircraft in their vicinity, two Hurricanes of 87 Sqn on detachment at the Airfield at St Mary's, Scilly Isles were scrambled to an area some 30 miles south west of the Scilly Isles where they intercepted a lone Heinkel He111. Alex Thom was the first to attack, his windscreen being sprayed with oil as his rounds tore into the Heinkel's starboard engine. Breaking away, his wingman F/O Roscoe now took over the chase, but the German bomber was already mortally wounded and was observed to alight onto the sea where upon the crew immediately took to their life raft as the Heinkel began to sink beneath the waves just minutes later, Thom circled overhead until he saw the motor launch arrive to pick up the German aircrew before returning back to St Mary's.
