Tribute to Lt. James Meissner by Ivan Berryman.

Joining the 94th Pursuit Squadron in France in March 1918, James Meissner scored a total of 8 victories between May and October of that year. Shown here in his Nieuport 28, he scored 4 of his victories flying this aircraft before taking over command of 147th Pursuit Squadron flying a Spad S.XIII in July and scoring his final 4 victories. He died of pneumonia in 1936 but had top American flying Ace Eddie Rickenbacker as a pallbearer, a former colleague from the 94th Pursuit Squadron.

Sabre's Edge - Tribute to Edwin L 'Ed' Heller by Ivan Berryman.

Already an ace in WWII, Ed Heller was again to find himself involved in aerial combat during the conflict in Korea, now flying the mighty F-86 Sabre with the 25th FIS, 51st FIW against the potent MiG15. Moving to 16th FIS as Squadron Commander, he was to claim 3.5 victories over MiGs before being shot down himself in January 1953. His release from captivity by the Chinese did not occur until two years after the war ended but, upon repatriation, he returned to the air flying F-100s during the Cuban Missile Crisis, finally retiring in 1967. He is depicted here in Hell-er Bust X, claiming a MiG 15.

101st Airborne en route to Normandy by Ivan Berryman.

A Douglas C-47 of the 91st Troop Carrier Squadron, 439th Troop Carrier Group gets away from the Devon airfield of Upottery on 5th June 1944 carrying paratroops of 101st Airborne Division. The company departed from Upottery airbase in Devon, England, and dropped over the Cotentin Peninsula of Normandy, France in the early hours of the morning of June 6th, 1944 at the start of the Normandy invasion.

Colonel Robin Olds by Ivan Berryman.

F-4C Phantom II of Colonel Robin Olds of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, January 1967.

Desert Hawk by Ivan Berryman.

Originally conceived as a replacement for the US Army's ageing Bell UH-1s, the UH-60 Black Hawk first entered service in 1979 and has since served in almost every campaign that US and coalition forces have been involved with. This UH60 is landing to pick up troops in Iraq in 2004.

Drop Zone Ahead by Ivan Berryman.

Douglas C-47s of the 439th Troop Carrier Group, 94th Troop Carrier Squadron, approach the Drop Zone above Normandy on the night of 5th / 6th June 1944 at the start of Operation Overlord.

Pacific Warriors by Ivan Berryman.

Often sidelined by other, more glamorous fighters, the Vought F4U Corsair is considered by many to be the best piston-engined fighter ever built, able to outfly anything the Japanese air force could pit against it. So perfect was this versatile and robust design that it remained in production for 12 years, right up until 1952. The most important operator of the F4U during the Second World War was the US Marine Corps, flying from scattered island bases throughout the Pacific, these examples being from the 4th Marine Air Wing based at Majuro Atoll in the Marshalls during the Summer of 1944.

Predator by Ivan Berryman.

The extraordinary Lockheed F.117A Stealth fighter proved an awesome sight when at last it was revealed to the world in 1990, and it was soon to distinguish itself in combat in the deserts of the Middle East during the Iraqi campaign of 1991. Predator depicts an example of this inspired machine at altitude against an evening sun, benign and at the same time menacing, an intriguing testament to mans conquest and exploitation of the skies.

Last One Home by Ivan Berryman.

A pair of P51D Mustangs of the 361st Fighter Group, 8th Air Force, escort a damaged B17G Flying Fortress of the 381st Bomb Group back to its home base of Ridgewell, England, during the Autumn of 1944.

Valley Forge Fly-By by Ivan Berryman.

Lieutenant Robert C Wattenburger shows off the unique lines of the Vought F.4U Corsair 124723 (NP-8) of VC-3 during a low-level fly-by of USS Valley Forge in May, 1952.

The Ubiquitous Dakota by Ivan Berryman.

The Douglas C-47 Skytrain - or Dakota, as it was known in RAF service - saw extensive use both as a glider tug and troop transport throughout World War 2, most notably for delivering paratroops to their designated drop zones over Normandy in June 1944 and over Arnhem in September the same year, often in the face of extreme anti-aircraft fire and attacks from enemy fighters. Here, C47s of the 81st Troop Carrier Squadron, 436th Troop Carrier Group drop paratroops above Holland as part of Operation Market Garden.

Watchful Sandy by Ivan Berryman.

Playing a crucial role in the Vietnam conflict, the HH.53 'Jolly Green Giant' helicopters flew frequent courageous missions deep into North Vietnam to rescue even single US aircrew that were known to be still alive, always supported by the capable A-1H Skyraiders - or Sandy's - whose long endurance and low-speed, low-altitude capability made it the ideal guardian for the helicopter missions.

Into the Unknown by Ivan Berryman.

Douglas C-47s of the 91st Troop Carrier Squadron, 439th Troop Carrier Group deploy the 101st Airborne Division above the drop zone on the night of 5th/6th June 1944 at the start of Operation Overlord.

Leap of Faith by Ivan Berryman.

Dodging heavy flak and anti aircraft fire in the skies above Normandy, Douglas C-47s of the 91st Troop Carrier Squadron, 439th Troop Carrier Group see the 101st Airborne Division away on the night of 5th/6th June 1944 at the start of Operation Overlord. D-Day had arrived.

USS Dwight Eisenhower by Ivan Berryman.

A pair of F18 Hornets overfly the Nimitz-class carrier USS Dwight Eisenhower (CV-69) with the surface combatant USS Arleigh Burke (DDF-51) off her port bow.

Tribute to Walker 'Bud' Mahurin by Ivan Berryman.

Flying P-47 Thunderbolts with the 56th Fighter Group in England, Bud Mahurin scored more than 20 victories during World War Two. Seen here in his personal aircraft 42-8487 UN-M named The Spirit of Atlantic City owing to it being paid for by bonds from that city, he shot down three Me109s in a day and three Fw190s another day, before eventually being brought down by return fire from a German bomber. Evacuated from France with the help of the Resistance, he then flew P-51 Mustangs against the Japanese in the Philippines, scoring one more victory before again being shot down, bailing into the ocean. He went on to score more victories in the Korean War before being shot down and taken prisoner for more than a year. He was the only pilot of the US Air Force to down enemy aircraft in the European Theater, Pacific Theater and Korean War. He died in 2010.

'Dinah Might' Homeward Bound by Ivan Berryman.

Tasked with low level bombing operations at the start of Operation Overlord on 6th June 1944, the B-26 Marauders of the 386th Bomb Group, 553rd Bomb Squadron, carried out their missions with great success, softening up the German defenses to pave the way for the Allied landings along the beaches of northern France. Shown here is one such aircraft, 131576 AN-Z, now on display at the Utah Beach Museum.

Clipper Virginia at Tempelhof by Ivan Berryman.

Douglas DC-6B N6103C Clipper Virginia of Pan American World Airways is depicted at Berlin's Tempelhof airport in the mid 1960s. This aircraft continued flying with various operators right up until 1978 when it was damaged beyond economical repair at San Juan airport in Puerto Rico, having overrun the runway.

The Dash for the Beach by Ivan Berryman.

Two Republic P.47s of the 78th FG roar low over the Normandy beaches as the Allied invasion gets underway during Operation Overlord on 6th June 1944 as an LCT(5) Tank Landing Craft makes its break for the beach through a hail of enemy fire. These craft were used at all the D-Day beaches, carrying mixed loads of vehicles and stores in almost impossible conditions.

Cat Among the Pigeons (FW190) by Ivan Berryman.

It was in 1941 that the remarkable Focke-Wulfe FW190 first appeared in the skies of Europe, quickly establishing itself as a most formidable adversary. It proved to be the supreme weapon against all allied bomber forces. Here FW190A-8 of 1 Gruppe, Jagdgeschwader 1 is shown attacking a B17G of 381st Bomb Group during a critical defence of the Reich in 1944.

Tribute to Joe Peterburs by Ivan Berryman.

This is the moment when Joe Peterburs began his chase after German ace Walter Schuck's Messerschmitt Me262 on 10th April 1945, a combat that ended in victory for the American. But this was to be a day of mixed fortunes for Peterburs who was himself brought down some time later by ground fire whilst strafing an airfield. He was captured, but escaped and fought with a Russian tank unit to the battle of Wittenberg on the Elbe.
